Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Chimney Safety: Codes and Laws which should be followed
Chimneys are structures which are responsible for ventilating smoke and flue gases from building's fireplace, furnace, stove, boilers, etc. They are important part of building construction both residential and industrial. Nevertheless their poor construction and ill-maintenance have caused major fire outbreaks. To regulate such havoc wreaks the US Government have placed some regulatory codes and laws on chimney safety. Chimney safety is a cumulative effort of the chimney designers/makers, users and cleaners where each of them has to follow the rules on their part to ensure a safe fire and smoke free environment.

The chimney safety starts right from the design. There are several ergonomic factors that should be kept in mind while designing. Any solid or fluid burning material that produces flue gases of a total temperature of 550 degrees F or 480 degrees F above room temperature should be connected to a chimney. The condensation should be such that it should not be responsible for the rapid deterioration of the stack or vent of the chimney. The building materials of the chimneys should be such that they would be able to withstand the high temperatures and the corrosive gases. If more than one flue is to be installed in a single chimney then their linings should be separated as per the temperature regulations of the fireplace.

There is a formula for determining the chimney height which depends on the area of the fireplace and the nature of the combustible substances. It is as follows:

D = F vA

Where D is the height the chimney, A is the area of the combustion chamber and F is a constant value determined by the nature of the combustible substances when burnt to a pre-defined temperature.

Once the construction of a chimney is completed then a test run and smoke test should be performed. These tests should be able to demonstrate the perfect operating conditions of the chimneys. In case of any faults or leaks then they should be rectified immediately. For a prefabricated metal chimney there should be a minimum clearance from the wall of the combustion chamber. The regular clearances are 6 inches for low temperature and 24 inches for medium and high temperatures. Whatever the design and building materials are of the chimney it cannot be actually constructed unless there is an approval from the commissioner of the specified area.

The rules not only comply for the construction but also in the maintenance of the chimneys. All the chimneys should be swept and cleaned regularly with professional help of chimney sweeps. A chimney is always cleaned from bottom rather than top so as to avoid collection of dust or debris inside the building. A trained chimney sweep not only cleans your chimney but also identifies and repairs the cracks and holes that might be hazardous. The most important organizations in the US that regulate the chimney maintenance industry are The National Chimney Sweep Guild and Chimney Safety Institute of America. These institutes provide certifications for chimney sweeps so as to manage their professional careers.
