Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Creosote Dangers

Creosote is a mineral deposit that builds up inside the chimney when you burn wood. If you are using unseasoned wood, or wet/fresh wood, the amount of creosote created will be greater because the fire cannot get as hot and burn as efficiently. Creosote is very dangerous and is highly combustible and it has three different types. The first type is the first degree creosote that can be formed with ordinary soot or smoke. It is not as dangerous as second and third degree creosote because this is just like normal soot that can easily be removed by sweeping the chimney with a brush.

The second degree of creosote has the appearance of a hard and somewhat shiny material and is dangerous because it can be ignited once it comes in contact with a glowing ember. This is the type of creosote that causes chimney fires, but it can be prevented if you have a regular schedule of inspection and cleaning from a professional chimney sweep. The fire caused by second degree creosote is a silent fire and you will never know that your chimney is on fire unless you smell it or you can see it from your rooftop.

The last type is the third degree creosote that looks like a sticky gum and has a gooey appearance. This is an extremely combustible material and it can cause not only a chimney fire, but it burns so quickly that it can destroy your entire house very quickly as well. Once this creosote comes in contact with a smoldering piece of ember or any burning material that is sucked up by the flue, the fire will spread immediately and you will hear a roaring sound once the fire has started. Keep in mind, your house safety is the top most priority and cannot be compromised at any cost and hence you should exit your house immediately and call 911.

Now you might have a good idea about creosote and what type of fire hazards it can cause. It is very much combustible and it ignites easily so never use gasoline or kerosene indoors to start your fire. You should stay really aware about the creation of creosote within your own chimney. Avoid using wet woods or the unseasoned woods in the chimney as this can trigger the creation of creosote easily. Apart from this you have to get annual inspections. When a sweep finds any creosote buildup, they will remove it as part of their annual inspection process. They can also educate you more about how to prevent creosote buildup. A safe use of the chimney is always important. In this regard, having ideas related to creosote and its prevention can always help you to enjoy the use of your chimney on a long run.
