Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Is Your Chimney Flue Large Enough to Support the Fireplace? What is the Correct Ratio?

Most of the time people prefer to go for a large chimney flue in order to support the fireplace. With small chimney flue a fireplace will not be able to work properly. But have you ever tried to know about the correct ratio for the chimney flue and the fireplace. Well, as per the old method it was 10:1. That means for ten sq inches opening of the fireplace the flue size should remain one sq inch. If you have installed a fireplace that is equipped with glass doors, then the measurement should be taken for the metal frame that sites at the inside portion. If there is an air-intake area for the glass door, then it also needs to be calculated while deciding the flue size for the fireplace. for example if you have a fireplace that is thirty inches wide and thirty inches high, then the total opening area will come 1,080 sq inches. For this type of fireplace your chimney flue size should remain around 108 sq inches.

This calculation is based on the old rule that is already mentioned here. And when you have the opening of the chimney flue too small, you also need to minimize the opening of the fireplace. Or you can enhance the opening of the flue so that a proper ratio can be achieved for both the chimney flue and the fireplace. In order to lessen up the opening for the fireplace, you can simply assign a smoke guard there. This is the easiest way to achieve the proper ratio while minimizing the opening size of the fireplace. At a top of chimney you cannot see mortar well, thus make sure anybody who works on the roof inspects it for you. The chimney sweep must look over mortar as the routine check. The bad mortar joints must be dealt immediately instead of later. When joints begin to fail then damage accelerates fast. Water (from snow and rain) thawing and freezing in small crack turns this in the larger crack and mortar crumbles. Suppose the problem is left for long, then your chimney might collapse.

The story in the terms of the fireplaces is also similar; the difference is there are not the freeze and thaw cycles but instead high temperatures that cause stress in mortar. Although high temperature mortar gets used (refractory cement,) the materials do not hold up forever. There is more of danger as well. There is always a structural problem that is fireplace is supporting the stack of masonry that weighs many tons. You would like to keep these things from shifting! There's also one obvious danger of fire of having the "holes in system" in fireplace or chimney since it passes through your house. Chimney liners also have plenty of problems and you cannot see them very easily. Thus, it takes careful inspection by somebody who knows what he is looking at.
