Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to avoid carbon monoxide while heating your home with fireplace
The Carbon Monoxide or the CO is a colorless and odorless gas that can kill easily. The CO is found in the fumes which are produced by the fuel used to burn the trucks, cars, stoves, fireplaces, grills, furnaces, gas ranges and small engines. The CO may build up inside the home and it can poison the animals and the people who are breathing into it. The symptoms that show that there is CO poisoning in the area are confusion, chest pain, vomiting, upset stomach, weakness, dizziness and headaches. When someone breathes too much CO, he can pass out or it can kill him. The people who are drunk or are sleeping may die because of the CO without being aware of what it is happening.

The fireplaces and the carbon monoxide are dangerous mixture. The carbon monoxide kills many people while in their homes every year. Since the CO is always produced when any type of the fuel is burned, any type of the appliance in the home that uses the fuel can be the source of the CO. When the appliance is not working well, it can lead to CO.

To protect yourself and your family against the CO caused by the fireplace, you have to keep the following in mind. You need to have a CO detector in your home as far as you have the fireplaces, appliance and the furnace that use the fuel. The detector should be kept in the sleeping area or in the hallway.

You need to open the fireplace damper before you light the fire. It has to be kept open up to the time all the ashes cool down. The damper should not be closed when the ashes are warm. When the damper is open, the buildup of the poisonous gas can easily be avoided. Charcoal lighter, gasoline or other types of the fuel are not recommended to be used to relight or to light the fire because their vapor may explore. The flammable materials have to be kept away of the fire , the flammable liquids have to be store outside of the home and the use of the charcoal increase the possibility of carbon monoxide in the home.

The chimney that had been clogged or blocked because of the soot or leaves may lead to byproducts of the combustion which include the CO. It is recommended that the chimney should be inspected and cleaned on regular basis in order to remove or to prevent the blockage. The chimney may be fitted with the screen cap in order to avoid the nest building inside.

When gas powered or wood burning fireplaces are used, the user should be extra careful about the carbon monoxide. In order to ensure fresh air inside, the windows have to be opened by few inches. The scrap lumber, painted wood or treated wool should not be burned; only the seasoned firewood has to be burned. Regular maintenance of the chimney, burner or flue will lessen the CO troubles significantly and it has to be done by a qualified technician or chimney sweep.
