Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Repointing a Chimney vs. Rebuilding
With time, and constant exposure to unpleasant weather conditions results in the decay of bricks and mortar joints used in chimneys. Repointing is reviewing the external mortar joints in a masonry chimney. This means filling up external voids on the surface of chimneys, which could gather salt deposits as time passes by.

The voids on the surface of the chimney should be filled with a mortar of a type and color similar to the old one. Disparities in materials could lead to differences in what is seen and what is felt. The kind of mortar used determines the time required for curing.

A mortar analysis is the starting point of a professional repointing process. A sample is used to identify the ratio and composition of the mortar.

When a chimney needs repointing, it should be attended to immediately. Any delay or failure to do the needed could result in a build-up of water in the interior of the chimney. The water would expand and contract as per its dynamics, and ultimately, the masonry of the chimney would suffer.

Rebuilding A Chimney
Rebuilding a chimney comes to the fore when all possibilities of repair are lost. Lack of adequate maintenance, an encounter with bad weather conditions, exposure to water and use of faulty mortar in construction are some of the factors that warrant a chimney rebuild.

The task of rebuilding is performed on a strong base. The bricks are piled on till the optimum height is reached for the smoke to flow out freely. A typical rebuild includes climbing up scaffolding, bringing down the existent structure, and rebuilding a new one as per specifications.

Chimney rebuilds are of three kinds: partial chimney rebuilds, roof line up chimney rebuilds, and total chimney rebuilds. A chimney crown is used to prevent the need for frequent rebuilds. A chimney rebuild is quite an expensive option, and therefore, the preferred option is repointing.

When the damage to the mortar in a chimney has gone beyond limits, a comprehensive rebuilding would be recommended. If the mortar has considerably degenerated, the wall could easily be brought down. All individual units are cleaned and they could be reused in similar positions. Attempts to repoint the damaged areas would be futile.

On the contrary, when the damage is in its initial stages, and a slight touch-up would do the trick, simply repairing the chimney would be enough. In case of brick chimneys, a crack could be easily dealt with by using an adhesive like silane-siloxane water repellant. The water-repellant allows water-vapor to escape, but keeps a tab on water. Some repointing has helped in this case.

There is a hot debate on the preferred option, repointing, or rebuilding. While some find rebuilding an expensive and arduous option, others say the same for repointing. Opinions differ, and one should always consult an expert before taking any decision.

Rebuilding a chimney requires a great amount of effort on the part of the chimney-sweep and it also involves a great amount of time. In stark comparison, the task of repointing chimneys is comparatively easier and done much quicker. But situations and conditions merit repointing over rebuilding. Experts should be consulted before arriving at any decision.
