Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

What is the difference between stage 1 creosote remover, stage 2 creosote remover and stage 3 creosote remover?

There are three major stages of creosote build up and each of the stages becomes more hazardous as it increases the chances of chimney fire which can lead to destruction of property or worse still lives. Creosote will take up different forms as it continues to clog up the chimney and with the continued build up, the more challenging to clean the chimney it gets. The first stage is whereby the creosote is flaky like and the soot is soft. During this stage it is very simple to clean up the chimney using even a soft bristled brush. The second stage, the soft and flaky creosote and soot metamorphoses into a shiny, hard flaky substance that is sticky and can cling to the flue lining. During this second stage, however much it may appear that the condensed substance can be brushed away, it is tough and cannot be easily brushed away. At this stage the most applicable too that can remove creosote more easily is the use of a powerful drill attached to rotary hoops (metallic rods). The third stage creosote has now transformed into a highly flammable (concentrated fuel) and sticky substance. At this point the tar like substance appears as though it is dripping down the inside of the chimney. The creosote hardens on the lining of the chimney and gets thicker as more soot and creosote continues to build up. At this stage the more combustible it gets and more challenging to remove. The only intervention could be chemical removers.

A chain and rotary head is also an alternative when the creosote has hardened and not sticky. However this is not a recommendable option when the chimney lining is made from ceramic or clay as it could get broken. Replacing the flue lining may be the only choice at this stage. Problem with having any openings in system is liquid creosote can go through joints or cracks as well as accumulates outside the flue tile. It is one serious problem as in the chimney fire the creosote ignites and becomes slow burning fire. The house fire becomes the greater possibility. It's probably good to consider unsafe when any chimney having 3rd stage creosote in it, particularly if there is the chimney fire. Frankly, even though servicemen remove creosote if possible, cleaning doesn't yield much of safety you would hope for.

Thus, it's probably good to remove old tiles totally (and get rid of the creosote on outside of tiles also) and replace liner with new insulated liner. Reasons there are the bad mortar joints and cracks in the chimneys are many, including: Wrong mortar is often used, and dries very quickly & falls out after the construction. Some of the masons "work very fast" and do not think it is important to seal joints. Earth is shifting and stack of the tiles moves with time. This will open the mortar joints and at times crack the tiles.
