Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Unsafe levels of Chimney Creosote Explained

Creosote is a mixture of hundreds of different chemicals. The major chemicals present in the coal tar are PAHs or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, creosols and Phenol. These chemical are all present in creosote. Creosote is the oily and thick liquid, which can easily be set to fire. The color of creosote is generally ranging from amber to black. Creosote is also a pesticide, and people who have to deal with creosote must be certified and trained in the handling of creosote.

There are 3 Levels of Creosote

First Level

Creosote consisting mostly of soot is categorized as 1st degree creosote. This creosote is easy to remove from the chimney than other kinds of creosote. The only supplies needed to remove this 1st degree creosote are a chimney brush or a trovel.

The best way to avoid large amounts of creosote buildup is to burn seasoned wood in an airy area, to make sure that the flue is warmed properly by the fire's heat. If a there is not proper air circulation to the fireplace or chimney it will cause more smoke to enter the home, and prevent the chimney flue from getting properly heated.

Second Level

Creosote in the 2nd stage is more of a tar-like substance and can easily cause a chimney fire if it is not dealt with. In the 2nd stage creosote removal is more difficult and complicated than creosote removal in the 1st stage. In the 2nd stage the creosote is hard, and shiny tar. To remove this kind of creosote we can use a rotary loop. A rotary loop is a steel cable attached to a hub with metal rods which are turned by a powerful drill, this is effective in removing creosote. Second degree creosote is the type that is formed when there is not enough air circulation.

Third Level

3rd degree creosote is very tough to deal with, and many times people will replace their fuel liners in order to get rid of it. 3rd level creosote looks as if there is tar flowing down the inside of your chimney. This creosote is highly concentrated and has most likely been recoated multiple times to from a thick layer. 3rd degree creosote is usually caused by burning when the flue has not been properly heated.

To avoid having to deal with 3rd degree creosote it is advised to use seasoned wood, as undeveloped green wood has a much greater creosote emission when burned. It is also important to hire a professional to install different appliances for the house to ensure that everything operates properly. The most dangerous aspect of 3rd degree creosote is that it catches fire easily, and chimney fires can easily lead to house fires.
