Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to Minimize Creosote in your Chimney

Creosote can be found anywhere inside your chimney or fireplace and this material is very dangerous because it is extremely combustible and can easily be ignited by having contact with a smoldering tissue, paper or even a smoldering ember. You should know how creosote buildup in the chimney so you should know how to minimize it because this cannot be avoided. Creosote will be deposited to your chimney if you do not have enough air space in your flue, it is the smoke that cannot come out of the opening up the chimney which attached itself into the lining or firebricks and mortar if your chimney doesn't have a liner. It is made when there is not enough combustion of the wood in the fireplace and there would be no enough combustion if the air will cool down quickly or if the process of burning is incomplete.

To minimize creosote in your chimney, have it cleaned and inspected regularly to maintain it. Do not use a wet or unseasoned wood because the combustion will not be completed since the air quickly cools down if the wood that you will use in the fireplace is not dried. A wood can be dried after six or more months but do not use a dried wood that is chemically cured like a wood with paint or varnish as this will increase creosote in the flue. You can also minimize creosote if there is enough space for air in the flue, do not make the flue too small for your fireplace but do not make it too big because the air will be cooler before it came out of the chimney and this will cause a second and third degree creosote to stick in your chimney liner and flue. Whenever fireplace gets used, deposition of creosote happens in chimney flue. Creosote is flammable as well as creates high potential hazard while using the fireplace, so it is always good to minimize buildup that takes place. If you fail to take out creosote from flue then it will result in deadly fire in your chimney. It is important to get your chimneys inspected yearly for determining if buildup of creosote has reached to its dangerous levels or not.

Why You Need to Minimize the Creosote Buildup?

Creosote has got 3 stages or levels and when ever stage increases, it gets very hazardous and difficult to get removed from chimney flue.

First creosote stage is very much like the flaky soot, which can be quite simple to clean away with chimney brush.

Second stage is described as hard and black flakes. These flakes have hardened tar and that cannot be brushed away very easily, but this can get removed without any high measures. One popular way to remove second stage creosote is with rotary loop. Drill turns its rods and it gets your job done.

Third stage needs be avoided, as it is quite to clean and is concentrated fuel of tar dropping inside the chimney liner.
