Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Waterproofing Chimney Leaks
Chimney leaks occur occasionally especially when the system has been in use for a very long period. The leaks can lead to serious damage when you fail to handle them. One way to take care of the leaks is to waterproof the chimney. Here are vital tips to engage:

Take precaution first
Before you start waterproofing your chimney, you have to take proper precaution. You must make sure the pitch of the roof is not very steep before you start climbing. You should also be ready to protect yourself if you happen to fall from the roof.

Measure the surface area properly
You need to measure the suffer area of your chimney to get started with the waterproofing process. You have to measure the sides and add everything up to determine the total.

Clean up the chimney
You have to clean up the chimney before waterproofing. You need to clear creosote, debris, dusts, and rust from the system. You can use cleaning supplies to get the entire fireplace neat before taking any other step. You have to allow the chimney to dry properly for some hours before you move on.

Cover non-target areas
Make sure you protect other areas of the chimney which you're not targeting in the waterproofing process. You can use a drop cloth for that. You have to cover the base and the floor as well. You should also close nearby windows.

Carry out necessary repairs
It's important you carry out necessary repairs before waterproofing the chimney. This is usually recommended when you notice cracks and damages on the system.

Pick a good Water Repellent
You'll need a water repellent for the waterproofing process. It usually allows the surface to breathe as it keeps water out of the way. You can get it from a local hardware store that sells chimney products.

Start the waterproofing process proper
With the water repellent, you can kick-start the waterproofing process. You simply need to use a pump-up garden sprayer that has a fan-like nozzle to apply the water repellent. You have to make sure the repellent covers the targeted areas you measured before. You have to start from the bottom area of the chimney to apply the water repellent. From there, you move to the top.

Apply a flood coat
You need to apply a flood coat to make the surface to be well saturated and accommodate enough of the water repellent. You can also use a bristle brush to distribute the water repellent evenly on the targeted surface. Make sure you allow the water repellent to dry for some hours. It may take up to 6 hours to dry. Make sure you don't apply the water repellent too much as it can easily darken the entire surface.

That's it! You've waterproofed your chimney!

Make sure you clean up the entire area after the process. You have to remove the drop cloth and other tools you've used. Make sure you watch your brush and sprayer with enough water and detergent at the end.
