Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Certified chimney sweeps use Vacuum control (dust-free) cleaning and if you are a DIY person, you should too!

Cleaning the chimney is not an easy job and if you did it incorrectly, then that would spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r because you would think that the creosote was removed successfully after you clean the chimney when in fact it is not. Using a vacuum control cleaner is easier than manually cleaning the chimney. The first thing that you need to have is an ash vacuum cleaner that is designed to be used for ashes and not just an ordinary house vacuum. You also need to have a chimney brush and rod that you can use to remove stubborn creosote.

Before cleaning your chimney, you need to block off the fireplace, so ash does not enter your living area. Place tarps on the ground and blocking the fireplace entrance, with the hose of the vacuum attached to the tarp. This will require a hole so the duct sticks through the tarp and can clean out all the soot that falls. Once the fireplace is securely blocked from any airflow except the duct going to your vacuum cleaner, you can go out onto the roof. Brush the chimney flue from your rooftop with a chimney brush and make sure to do it several times to remove all creosote. When you reach the end of the rod, just connect another rod until you brushed the innermost part of the chimney all the way to the bottom. After doing that, prepare the vacuum cleaner and remove any ashes in the fireplace. Next, put the cotton bag and the ceramic filter power head with the cage followed by the ring to prevent any leakage and to keep the seal tight. Before opening the access door of the chimney where all the creosote remains, ashes, soot, and dusts will be, put a bag exactly below the door to avoid dirt from falling on the floor.

Use the vacuum to suck up all the dirt that accumulated on the chamber behind the access door instead of sweeping it clean so the small particles will not fly around you when the wind blows. After sucking up all the dirt, dust, and ashes, you can just remove them from the vacuum cleaner by transferring them inside a trash bag. Dispose carefully after tying the opening tightly. It goes without saying that you must make sure the ashes are completely cooled before cleaning your chimney. Never suck burning embers into your vacuum as this will create a fire hazard.

Whether you are using a chimney for the indoor fireplace or for the kitchen stove, it's always better to keep the whole unit clean. This will help you to get the best use of the chimney in a long run. At the same time, keeping the chimney cleaned properly can enhance the lifetime of the whole unit. In order to clean the chimney you need to have proper tools and a proper vacuum cleaner, chimney brush and rod are all part of this equation. You need to have all these items at your disposal. Using the vacuum cleaner will help you to clean the chimney without having any dust entering your living area. If you are not sure about how to do this work properly, you should hire a qualified chimney sweep to clean your chimney. These professionals are equipped state of the art tools and the proper knowledge required to clean and inspect your chimney to keep you safe from fires.
