Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Chimney Sweep DIY/Chimney Sweep process
Chimney Sweep is all about clearing the soot or creosote that build up at the fireplace. Actually, this is often carried out by certified Chimney Sweep Professionals. However, you can still carry out the process especially when the soot build-up is not much. Here are simple DIY tips to engage:

Get Prepared
You need to get set to sweep the chimney! Here are steps to take:
  • Check the level of the sooth or creosote build-up in the chimney. You can use a flashlight to check inside the chimney. You can also use a small knife to scrap inside the chimney. If the build-up is much, you can start the sweeping process.
  • Make sure you put on safety goggles and hand gloves. You also need to wear an old cloth before you start sweeping the chimney.
  • Make sure you get your house set. You need to protect the house from the soot that will be coming out when you start sweeping the chimney. Try removing furniture products, rugs, and other instruments that are close to the chimney.
  • Make sure you have your cleaning tools such as Long-handle brush, Flue liner brush, wire brush, drop cloth, dust mask, flashlight, safety goggles, vacuum cleaner, and so on.
Start the Chimney Sweep Process
Once you're set for the job. You can go ahead and start sweeping the chimney. Here are simple steps to take:
  • You can start sweeping the chimney from the top section down to the bottom section.
  • You need to sweep off the damper from the chimney flue
  • You might have to climb to the roof or have someone help you out with that.
  • Use your brush to clear soot inside the chimney. You have to scrub as fast as you can. You need to move in an upward and downward motion.
  • Try using the brush to clean the bottom area of the chimney
  • You can still use a pipe and a brush to sweep soot out of the chimney.
Taking Precautions
Once you're done with the sweeping process, you have to make sure you clear soot and other debris from the brush and every other tool you used. You also need to gather the dirt in a waste bucket. You can then go ahead to dispose the soot and creosote according to the local laws governing your area.

Meanwhile, you should never try to stand on a roof during wet and icy conditions in the name of sweeping a chimney. You should not try to operate a naked flame close to the chimney during the sweeping process.

Finally, you don't have to breathe in the creosote or soot during the sweeping process. If you happen to come in close contact with such debris, you need to wash your skin with good toilet soap in order to avoid adverse reactions.
