Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Pyrolysis Explained

The word pyrolysis comes from the Greek word pyro meaning fire and the word lysis meaning separating. In pyrolysis, if oxygen is not present, the carbonaceous material is undergoing the process of thermal decomposition. It is also the conversion of a large compound into a small compound. This is used if you want to make charcoals, tar, and gases that are not condensable. It is also the first part of a combustion process.

There are several uses of pyrolysis like cooking, wherein the food is exposed in a dry environment at a high temperature, some of the examples are roasting, grilling, baking, and toasting. It is a chemical decomposition which is caused by heat and usually happens in a fireplace. Becoming aware of what pyrolysis means and how it happens can prevent chimney fires that can burn the whole house down. When talking about fire that is caused by pyrolysis, the investigators are often clueless as to what really happened before the fire takes place.

Pyrolysis is a complicated thing because you need to understand the molecular structures to know that it is occurring. Pyrolysis does not involve any reaction from oxygen unlike combustion and hydrolysis. Avoiding a chimney fire caused by pyrolysis can be prevented by installing the proper flue and liner and keeping combustible materials such as a wooden hearth at a safe distance from the heat.

In order to determine molecules' molecular characterization, pyrolysis like process can be adopted. This can be only done with a conjunction to the PY-GC-MS or known as the Gas Chromatography Mass-Spectrometry. It is also the method through which the fungal decay happening with wood is analyzed. There are some industrial applications for which this process is adopted and implemented under pressure. During those processes the temperature remains more than 430 degrees centigrade. For the agricultural waste, the temperature remains around 450 to 550 degrees centigrade.

As pyrolysis is considered to be endothermic, there are many methods involved to supply the heat for the biomass particles that are proposed under this process. Through the air injection process, partial combustion of the biomass particles can be achieved. However, this is done to achieve the low quality products. While applying the hot gas direct heat can also be transferred. During this process enough heat needs to be supplied while maintaining a reasonable flow rate of gas.

The main reason homeowners with chimneys need to be concerned with pyrolysis is because it can chemically alter any combustibles such as hearths or beams that are too close to the chimney. Once chemically altered, it only takes about 200 degrees Fahrenheit to start a spontaneous fire with a combustible near the exterior of your chimney and fireplace. This is why clearance codes are so important to abide by and having a safety inspection by someone who knows the codes is vital.
