Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Creosote Defined – Getting Rid of It is Always a Better Option!

Creosote is a mineral that is formed after burning wood, especially wet wood. It is highly combustible and can be ignited by an ember or smolder from a tissue or paper. The appearance is not really pleasing to the eyes because it looks like decayed mold or a fungus. It can either be brown or black depending on the wood that was burned and the degree of the creosote. This mineral deposit can look crusty or flaky, but sometimes gooey and sticky or shiny and hard. Regardless of the appearance, all kinds of creosotes are dangerous and a fire hazard.

There are three degrees of creosotes that we should know. The first degree creosote is a large amount of smoke that was passing through the chimney in a form of soot while the second degree is thicker soot that is hard and shiny. The first degree is easy to remove by just using a brush while the second degree, though still removable, is not that easy to remove with a brush.

The third degree creosote is the most dangerous among the three degrees because it is caused by burning a wet wood combined with a cold chimney, and insufficient combustion air. This type has the gooey or sticky appearance and will become hard when cooled. This is the most combustible of all the degrees mentioned due to its ability to just boil once it is burned. A chimney sweep can define and identify the different types of creosote that can be found in the chimney, and he is also the right person to remove all types of it.

As creosote appears to be the prime cause behind the majority of chimney fires, you need to pay attention to it. While you cannot prevent creosote from forming in your chimney, you can reduce it by burning hot, dry wood and then eliminate it by cleaning your chimney annually. A professional chimney sweep will eliminate the creosote completely, even if there is a large amount built up. It is very important to maintain your chimney regularly though, if you want it to last for a long time.
