Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Replacing a Chimney Access Door
Chimney access doors help in accessing the chimney for cleaning purposes. It is used to remove combustion waste after the fire is put out. Before you start replacing your chimney door it is best that you ensure the chimney has cooled off so that you are not at risk of suffering burns. The access doors are available in different styles and sizes.

When replacing your chimney access door you will require the following tools; handsaw, hammer, Brick chisel, handsaw, tape measure and a framing square. Using a tape measure, measure the dimensions of the old chimney access door. Place an order of your preferred chimney access door with your supplier.

Using a chisel to curve out the old chimney access door then have it removed. Clear away the concrete from the area. After removing the old or worn out chimney access door ensure that the surrounding bricks are reinforced to prevent instances where they may collapse in future.

Place your new chimney access door where you just removed the old one and ensure it is on the same level with the wall. Mix some mortar and using a trowel place an even layer around the access door where you had chiseled when removing the old door. Ensure the newly installed access door is aligned to the chimney.

The access doors give access to ash drop below firebox in the masonry fireplaces. Door installs in exterior wall of a chimney and helps you remove creosote or ash accumulating in your chimney with time. Adding the chimney access door needs cutting the opening or installing the manufactured door made to prevent the cool air entering your chimney. These doors are accessible through sources online and at several building supply shops. Size of the access door is totally based on dimensions of fireplace and chimney.
  • Decide the elevation or location of ash drop. Generally, drop is 12 to 14inches below bottom of fireplace. Suppose necessary, you can use common reference, like bottom of the nearby window and door to establish its location.
  • Position flanges of door unit against your chimney at right location, with handle and hinges for door positioned rightly. Mark the outline of flanges on face of masonry with the felt tip marker. Then set your door aside.
  • Use framing square as the straight edge for marking another outline 1/4inch larger than first outline. It gives room for the mortar, which holds door in place.
  • Setup the power drill and rotary hammer with 1/2inch of diameter masonry bit. Put on the safety glasses and dust mask. Then drill 1/2inch of holes through masonry at every corner of larger outline.
  • Cut masonry all along lines of larger outline with the masonry cutting tool and circular saw with diamond blade.
  • Put on the work gloves. Remove masonry at an area of door opening with brick chisel & hammer. Insert tip of chisel in every mortar joint & strike other end of chisel with hammer to dislodge every masonry piece.
