Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Purposes Served by a chimney Liner
A chimney liner is a part of the chimney system that should not be ignored. You may think that you do not need them but they are vital in burning units that combust solid fuels, oil and gas as they help in guiding the byproducts from the burning unit outwards.

During your routine chimney inspection you should also ensure that your liner is in good working condition. Your chimney sweep will be able to identify issues that may require repairs or those that call for a replacement. Some of the reasons you may require a new liner include; if you currently do not have one, if the one you have is defective or if the one you have was not properly installed.

The chimney liner protects the interior walls of the chimney and directs waste, particles and gases produced during combustion out of the chimney. There are three major types of liners; clay, metallic and cast. Most clay liners are always built during the construction of the house; they however are difficult to replace in case of a crack. A cast in place liner is majorly used to reinforce a chimney.

Metallic liners work in almost all types of chimneys. They are available in rigid and flexible forms. They are also simple to install. Different chimney liners serve different purposes thus it is advisable to seek professional advice when installing one.

Liners in the chimneys serve 3 main functions:

1) Liner protects your home from the heat transfer to the combustibles. In NBS tests, the unlined chimneys will allow heat to move by the chimney very rapidly that adjacent woodwork can caught fire in 3 1/2 hours.

2) Chimney liners protect the masonry from corrosive combustion byproducts. It was determined in the test that if flue gases penetrated to brick & mortar, result will be reduction in usable life of chimney. The flue gases are actually acidic & eat away on mortar joints of chimney. When mortar joints corrode, the heat transfers very rapidly to nearby combustibles & dangerous gases like carbon monoxide will leak in living areas.

3) Chimney liners give rightly sized flue for best efficiency of the appliances. The modern wood gas and stoves and oil furnaces need rightly sized flue in order to perform rightly. Chimney is liable for not just allowing products of the combustion passage out of house, but draft generated by chimney supplies combustion air to appliance.

The incorrectly sized liner will lead to the excessive creosote buildup at wood burning stoves, and production of the carbon monoxide with the conventional fuels. The metal chimney liners, generally of aluminum or stainless steel, are mainly used to upgrade or repair the existing chimneys. The liners systems are all UL tested & listed, and suppose rightly installed or maintained are very durable and safe. The stainless steel is appropriate for the woodburning, oil and gas applications, whereas aluminum is the inexpensive choice for medium efficiency gas only. It's required that the high temperature insulation get used in the conjunction with liners for performance and safety considerations.
