Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Cleaning wood burning fireplace
Cleaning the wood burning fireplace is worth your time and money. If this is not done on a regular basis, then chances are you will have a messy room. A clean fireplace will always burn much efficiently and this has to come with regular cleaning.

When cleaning the wood burning stove, there are some materials that you have to collect in advance before anything else. For instance, you will need an old piece of newspaper, drop cloth, small brush, gloves, ash shovel, ash container as well as a putty knife. In some cases, you will also need a dust mask, vinegar, water, screwdriver, ash vacuum specially designed for the fireplace. It is necessary to burn the logs for sometime as this will help to make the creosote become loose and this will enable the cleaning process to be much faster. The appropriate time to clean the fireplace is when its cold as this will enable the creosote to come out easily.

Here are some of the cleaning tips for the wood burning fireplace:
  • Open the door of the stove to quickly access the firebox. Just incase your stove has a dampener, and then it will be much easier since the brush can liberally scrub within the chimney.
  • The ash shovel is normally used to scoop out the ash from the interior part of the stove. This however needs to be done on a surface that is non- flammable as this ensures there are no traces of hot embers immediately you dispose the ash.
  • During the entire process of cleaning the stove pipe, you can be obstructed by the firebricks, and hence you have to ensure they are out. The creosote should fall off within the bottom of the stove and not on the surface.
  • With the use of along brush, you can then clean on the upper part of the stove pipe, and this should be done in an up and down manner in order to loosen the creosote. In this case, the diameter of the chimney brush should fit within the stove pipe to make it easier when removing.
  • The chimney brush has to be moved vigorously to ensure that all the soot as well as creosote has been removed completely, in most cases, they should fall within the firebox.
The inside part of the stove needs to be cleaned first after which the outside part can be cleaned by simply wiping with some vinegar and soap solution. Just incase the stove is made of the brass material, then its much better to use the flammable products for as long as the object is not abrasive. Since most of the chimney pipes are normally made of stainless steel or galvanized steel, then it's going to be much easier to clean as it will control the process of streaking.

In most cases if you are not capable of handling this job on your own, it is much better to consider professional help in order to be assured of maximum safety.
