Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Guide to Installing a chimney Access Door
A chimney access door allows you to access the lower parts of the chimney to remove debris and combustion waste such as ash. It also allows you to easily clean the chimney. Herein we shall look at some steps to follow when installing or replacing a chimney access door.

The hard part during the installation would be the drilling of a hole as it requires a masonry drill and would take quite some time. Below are some items you will need when installing the access door;
  • Caulk gun.
  • Heat resistant caulk.
  • Cold chisel.
  • Mortar.
  • Hammer drill.
  • Bucket.
  • Trowel.
Ensure that the chimney has completely cooled off to avoid burns. Place the chimney door about eight inches off the ground and trace its perimeter on the wall with your chisel. Drill holes on all the corners of your sketch using the hammer drill. Drill other holes one inch away from the holes drilled at the corner of the sketch.

Chisel between the holes to create some sort of depression that joins them. Mix some mortar and using the trowel, place an even layer at the bottom of the chimney opening. Place some mortar at the top and then place the access door in the opening to the point it is flush aligned with the chimney. Once the mortar sets bead the anti-heat caulk along the edges of the access door using the caulk gun. Following the above steps will aid you in installing your chimney access door.

The chimney access door is underappreciated and overlooked. Not installed in every chimney, it's a back door of the chimney where all rubbish and mess is taken out. Whenever installed, the chimney access door is behind fireplace and located outside house. Before it is opened, all mess should be cleaned up. Caulk, bricks, flue tile liner, dust, or any debris accumulate with the regular use of fireplace. Condition of chimney flue is revealed by debris. For instance, concrete at a bottom of clean out area will indicate damage at top of chimney from frost, water, and animals. Concrete debris will signal that chimney is the potential hazard. While looking up through access door, the daylight must be visible from top of chimney.

On closing door, surrounding area must get inspected for ash, leaks, or other debris. Suppose bricks surrounding door appear worn and old, it will be advisable for replacing it before they crumble more and fireplace exit breaks far apart. Making use of brick hammer or chisel, either homeowner and chimney mason will remove mortar or loose bricks over opening. Bricks then can get replaced and new frame added over cleanout door. While chimney access outdoor can be worn or you want to install one in the chimney that lacks this, measure dimensions of preexisting door or available space, determine best pattern & door for needs. Door should be non-rusting, airtight, and give simple access to flue.
