Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Why should you consider repointing your chimney?
Repointing chimney is the process of filling the voids existing between the bricks of the chimney. Technically, mortar is the combination of lime, cement, sand and water that joins two bricks together. As the time passes, mortar begin to crack and voids are formed due to the fact of being exposed to heat, smoke and other external weather conditions. Effects of this voids are often very disastrous. Small cracks in between the bricks may lead to total collapse, if they are not treated in time. To be honest, Repointing chimney is tricky, needs lot of your time and you should have patience throughout the process. Let's discuss the step by step instructions to repoint a chimney.

Prepare yourself
Before repointing your chimney, be sure to wear googles and mask as you will be working in an area with lot of debris. Remember that mortar could potentially cause chronic lung disease, if inhaled. Hence, take the above point seriously before proceeding. Once you have taken all the precautions, it is the time to assess your chimney wall. Assess the damage of chimney by its depth. Erosion that are deeper than 8 mm, crumbling mortar and cracks should be noted. A sample of old mortar can be taken and can be given to professional to assess its composition.

Removing Mortar
This is the most important and time consuming process of the procedure. You should be extra cautious while removing mortar. You should remember that we are doing all this things to enhance the strength and to ruin its strength. Hence, while removing mortar you should not dig deep. Remove mortar only up to one fourth of an inch deep. Removing should be done in joint rack, if the level of damage is relatively low or if the chimney is new. Removing should be done in cold chisel, if the level of damage is high or if the chimney is old. Be cautious, while handling old buildings.

Preparing the new mortar
To avoid any future issues, it is suggested to prepare a customized mortar based on the condition of the chimney. New mortar composition should approximately match the old mortar composition. If doubt arises, it's better to consult a professional. If you still can't figure out the old mortar composition, it is suggested to prepare new mortar as the combination of 6 part of lime, 2 parts of sand, 1 part of cement with sufficient water. Use relatively high compression strength cement for a new chimney and use less compression strength cement for an old chimney. It is because high compression strength cement may collapse the old bricks. Mortar should be strong enough to hold but not to collapse.

Applying the new mortar and cleaning up the debris
Apply the mortar using a pointing trowel and make sure to apply mortar between the bricks in sufficient amount. After applying the mortar, give it an hour to harden. After it has harden, remove debris by the wire brush. Be cautious while removing debris so that you don't remove any mortar.
