Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to remove smoke stains from your fireplace
A fireplace is one of the beautiful things in the living room and it is exceptionally useful during the winter season. Between uses, you need to keep it clean from ashes and soot. Technically, soot is a powdery substance formed due to incomplete combustion of organic material (wood) and the embarrassing black stain residue is produced by the soot. There are many ways to remove these disgusting stains from your fireplace and some of the methods listed in the internet will advise you to use highly reactive and corrosive chemicals. They have a negative impact in the long run. Hence, our article will focus on the environment friendly method to remove your strains. Things you need before getting started
Before starting to clean the stains, make sure you do have all the required things
  • Thick rubber gloves and googles
  • Sponge
  • Drop cloth or trap
  • Medium sized bucket with slightly warm water
  • Bathroom spray
  • Household vinegar
  • Household salt
  • Wet medium sized scrub brush or stiff brush
Safety first:
Wear rubber gloves to avoid contact with any sort of chemicals and googles are to protect your sensitive eyes from the chemicals. Preparation
Ultimate aim of this article is to help you get rid of the stains completely. To do that, cover the area surroundedfireplace with a drop cloth or trap to avoid the debris of soot being fallen back to your carpet. Let's start the real work
Unless you have extremely dirty stains, you should stick to this method. Water is the excellent cleaning agent and can be used effectively with spray and vinegar.

1. Dip the sponge with slightly warm water and start to clean your fireplace from top to down. Apply the bathroom spray to the strains and wait for 2 minutes. Start the cleaning process with the wet scrub when the foam of the spray has spread all over the brick wall. You may need to do the above step for many times, if you have high level of stains.

2. If you still notice sufficient amount of stain in the brick wall, consider using little amount of natural vinegar instead of warm water. Clean the stains with vinegar dipped sponge as explained above.

3. Even if the vinegar is not the cup of cake for your fireplace, following combination may help you. Mix an ounce of soap with the salt along with sufficient quantity of water to form a thick paste and this thick paste has to be applied to your wall and wait for 10 minutes so that the paste will be dried. After 10 minutes, remove the paste through the medium sized wet scrub. After removing the scrub, repeat the first step to make sure that every debris of the stain has been removed.

If you still see no magic, then using corrosive chemicals such as tri sodium phosphate may help you. Use tri sodium phosphate only as the last resort because it may potentially ruin your brick as all corrosive chemicals leave flammable surface of debris over the brick. Be more cautious while dealing with Tri sodium phosphate.
