Though repointing the firewall is something you might be considering necessary after seeing your mortar joints weathering, the real big task is to do it smartly, so that unnecessary work due to damage of sound mortar joints is avoided.

Before repointing, it is very important to keep the materials ready. Whether you are doing it for the firewall, or chimney or any other part of the system, you need to select the same colour, type and texture for the mortar, as in the existing mortar, so that there is no issue of compatibility between the new and the existing materials. For this, the very first process in repointing is to take some sound mortar and analyze it for the ratio of different ingredients and aggregates. Other factors to consider, while selecting the repointing material are permeability, compressive strength, and coefficient of thermal expansion. All this analysis is done by an architectural conservator.

The architectural conservator usually prepares for a visual examination of the masonry unit. In most cases, one look at the unit is enough for perfectly matching the materials. But, in large scale masonry units, all the factors mentioned above are noted down, and the best match is deduced accordingly.

Following steps are followed after the initial material analysis is done:

1)Identifying the points for repointing: Look for obvious indications like crumbling mortar, or loose joints, wide cracks, damp walls etc.

2)Mortar preparation: Mixing of the ingredients in the mortar should be done till there is proper texture and uniformity. Water is added to dry ingredients which are in the form of a mixture. Other additives can be added to boost the properties of the mortar. However, these are usually not necessary as other natural techniques like warming the sand and water, using high lime mortar etc. can be adopted, to get the desired properties.

3)Old mortar removal and application of new mortar: Once the points for repointing have been identified, the old mortar is removed without affecting other joints, and for this you can even use your hand, in case the firewall is a small one with soft materials. The depth of removal is almost equal to the width of the joint, or maybe a little more so that new mortar is given adequate space to gel with the joint. If proper work is not done, then the joint will have risen slightly above the rest of the masonry. This causes instability and bad looks.
