Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

The very first thing that has to be considered when largely looking at a chimney, is whether it has actually satisfied the clearances required for its height, width and other dimensions. Various problems related to chimneys and fireplaces, like fireplace smoking, or insufficient draft in the chimney etc. are all related to these dimensions. So, we have local codes for designing a chimney at different places in various kinds of terrain, but there is a common guide for all these sets of local codes, i.e. the national fire protection body of that particular country. For example the NFPA in USA has some common set of rules and regulations that are followed all across the country.

So if you were an engineer who is expected to design a safe chimney, these are the questions you may probably ask about the design, to verify whether it is alright for direct operation.

1)How tall is the chimney required to be?

The first and foremost observable thing about a chimney is its height. According to the NFPA, For proper functioning, it must be at a minimum height of 10 feet. And, to avoid the smoke from invading neighbourhoods, you need to make sure that the height of the chimney above the roof of the house should be 3ft, and also a minimum of 2 ft higher than other neighbouring buildings within 10 ft distance. Apart from these legal safety regulations, it is also necessary to see the manufacturer's catalogue for deciding the best height which can ensure efficient operation of the chimney.

2)How thick is the wall supposed to be?

The most common chimney material is masonry or brick, which has to have walls at least 4 inch thick according to NFPA standards.

3)How wide should the chimney flue be kept?

The width of your chimney flue must be kept in such a way that it fulfils the venting purpose it is being created for and the corresponding value, as mentioned in the standards. Depending on the appliance being vented by the flue, the building codes vary.

Another factor to consider while determining the flue width, is the 9:1 ratio that is supposed to be maintained between the fire place area and the flue cross-sectional area. This 9:1 ratio is necessary for ensuring the accurate draft through the flue, so as to avoid intermixing of smoke and newly induced air. Sometimes we also use the 10:1 rule interchangeably.

4)Does the chimney have all the internal clearances satisfied?

The chimney's dimensions should be such that, it has adequate clearances from all the components inside the system, which are combustible.

The very important clearance, is that the distance between the wall and the covering material must be at least 1 inch.

For allowing the stove to be installed close to the wall, protective covering of the stove with non-combustible material is important. In fact, the clearances maintained must still be as large as 36" for radiant stoves, according to safety standards. However, it can be much lesser for other types of stoves.

Another important safety clearance is 18 inch minimum clearance of the wall from all combustible surfaces.
