Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Smoke is Entering the House from your Chimney (aka drafting)
The primary reason why smoke is entering your house from the Chimney is the improper balance of Air pressure. There are basically 8 primary reasons you may be having Chimney smoke right inside your house and these are
  • When the damper is closed
  • When the damper is partially opened
  • When the Chimney flue is extremely dirty
  • When there is no cap on the flue
  • If your Chimney is not tall enough
  • When your Flue is not large enough for the opening of the fireplace
  • When your chimney is located outside your house
  • When your home is too air-tight
One of the obvious reasons why smoke is entering your house from your Chimney is because the damper is close. When the damper assemblies have malfunctioned they can block the damper. Similarly, when the damper is partially opened, only a portion of the smoke can exit through the flue. Creosote deposits can make your Chimney damper very dirty, and such dirt can obstruct the flue. The lack of a cap can force down smoke down the flue and into the house because weather turbulence and interfering winds have full access to enter the chimney.

If your Chimney is not tall enough, then smoke can enter into your house. The Chimney flue needs to be at least 10-12 feet up from the hearth, and flues that are too short are difficult to control. If your flue is not large enough for the fireplace opening, then you may have smoke directed into your house. The surface area of the chimney fireplace opening must at least be 10 times more than the surface area of the flue opening; therefore a flue opening that is too small may not be able to handle large smoke. When your Chimney is located right outside of the house the cold condensed air will sink down through the chimney flue rather than push up. Make sure the temperature inside the flue is warm so that it does not push smoke back into the house.

What to do to prevent smoke from entering your house from Chimney
There are quite a number of options you can consider to prevent smoke from being re-directed into your house from the chimney.

Make use of an extra flue tile extension especially to an upstairs fireplace flue. . Doing this will ensure that the smoke stays at least 18 inches well above the flue downstairs, and the downstairs chimney will not trap back airflow into the house.

Consider getting a top sealing damper that can be mounted at the top of the ceiling. The placing of extra top sealing damper will ensure some air-tightness but not too tight and it will prevent smoke from coming back into the house.

One of the best possible ways of preventing smoke from getting back into your house is to provide an extra source of combustion air from the outside of your house for the fireplace . a tight-fitting fire screen can also work to prevent the vacuum effect causing smoke to direct back into the house.
