Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Improper Chimney Ventilation
Improper chimney ventilation is a threat to the property owner because it may lead to the eruption of fire. It is also a threat to the neighboring areas and the environment at large. Chimneys that are built with improper heights and distances from other buildings, improper clearances or even include improper or unsafe heating appliances from other buildings are highly dangerous. A properly installed chimney on the other hand must be of five feet in height with a distance of about ten feet from the attic point. Another demonstration of improper chimney ventilation is the short chimneys that are installed in the attics. A chimney too short in height is most likely to cause improper ventilation and may even set the roof on fire.

Most importantly a short chimney can result in improper combustion of burning materials thus producing and emitting of potentially harmful gas carbon monoxide in the atmosphere. The chimney is often built to serve on something (like wood-burning fireplace and oil fired boiler), which produces higher volume of the combustion gasses at the higher temperature compared to gas appliances. Therefore, typical chimney flue also has greater area than typical gas vent. The chimneys & vents work just because hot combustion gasses will be less dense as well as buoyant than surrounding air. It creates the difference in its pressure (draft) that allows hot combustion gasses increase at top of chimney and vent where they're expelled from home. The chimney and vent that is very small won't have enough of capacity (or area) to expel combustion gasses as fast as needed to maintain adequate draft. The chimney and vent area, which is very large won't heat up enough for creating draft.

Improperly sized chimneys or vents cause two main problems. The first problem will be back drafting, where combustion gasses aren't expelled out from top of chimney and vent or flow into the home instead. The backdrafting will occur when the chimney and vent are very small or there are a lot of obstructions (such as elbow joints). The other problem will be condensation, where the water vapor in combustion gasses condenses at the interior of the chimney flue and vent. The water vapor will be acidic and severely deteriorate chimney and vent in short time frame. The condensation will happen when chimney and vent is very large.

Exposed chimney

An exposed chimney has got a side exposed to the outside wall somewhere below the roof line. A chimney serving as the vent for a gas appliance also runs the risk of getting exposed. You can look at chimney when evaluating the chimney that will serve as gas vent. Chimney should be enclosed totally within 4 walls of your home or system might not work rightly and must get evaluated by the qualified engineer. The exposed chimneys might not at all get hot to maintain the draft, and resulting in the backdrafting, condensation and both.
