Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Proper clearance to combustibles for chimneys and fireplaces
Adequate clearance is needed for combustibles around Chimneys and fireplaces, these clearances must be created at the surfaces, floors and walls of combustibles. Proper clearances are needed to combustibles for chimneys and fireplace because of a number of reasons;
  • For fire safety,
  • To ascertain the level of inspection appropriate for a type of Chimney,
  • Creation and maintenance of proper insulation of chimneys (most especially metal chimneys),
  • Non-combustible clearances must be created in order to ensure maximum ventilation around the chimney,
  • Clearances to combustibles for chimneys and fireplace will extend the lifespans of chimneys and enhance their efficiencies.
Creating Chimney clearances- Tips and ideas
Current standards recommend a minimum of 2-inch air space clearance to any combustible, especially the ones created in the interior of a Chimney that is filled with flashing or some fire-clockers. While many builders often violate this standard by building insulators rather than creating the air space, they end up allowing the combustible trim to be in close contact with the Chimney. This is an error that must be prevented at all cost. Some builders usually try to trim Chimneys with wood; however this is not as suitable as creating proper clearance.

If you are having an older chimney or fireplace, and it is in contact with combustibles, then a 4-inch thick Chimney wall will be recommended because such thick walls are safer. If your Chimney has one or two flues, then you may need to increase the thickness of the Chimney walls just to ensure the right clearance is created for more safety. The most recent codes and standards have stated that Chimneys with exposed masonry walls must not be designed too close to floors, baseboards and Chimney combustible ceilings.

It is always safer to fill air spaces within chimneys and fireplaces with non-combustible insulation materials in order to avoid the filling of such air spaces with combustible insulation. In order to achieve this, Chimney builders must insulate the air spaces created, or they simply trim up the masonry walls with Combustible trims.

Your Chimney builder must abide by the latest codes S231-12, and S237-12 that stipulates that builders must allow the combustible air space must be filled with non-combustible insulations and/or allow the chimney to be built in contact with combustibles most especially if the chimney walls are 8 inches thick at least. Some year back, Chimney walls are required to have a minimum of 12-inch thickness, however this rule seem to have been adjusted.

In order to create the ideal clearance to combustibles for chimneys and fireplaces, it is recommended that the combustible material must be in contact with a chimney with at least 8inches thick walls.

The application of heat shields can also be the best possible way to reduce fire clearance from flues. Non- combustible shield materials must be used for this purpose in order to minimize heat losses. You need to use heat connectors that will not transmit heat from the surface of such flues.
