Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Parging a Chimney Smoke Chamber
A smoke chamber is the area in a chimney located just over the firebox and under the flue. The chamber lets smoke get in the flue and out of the house.

Is it Necessary to Parge?
There is much talk lately about the smoke chambers and whether they should be parged or not. From some field info, it is evident that parging hasn't been performed on many chimney's smoke chambers. But let's see what the regulations say about it. The NFPA 211 Code Book, issued a few years ago, states in regard to smoke chambers in section 11.2.1.13: "The inner surfaces of the smoke chamber shall be parge-coated smooth, with an insulating refractory mortar..."

It is evident that the regulator considers that parging, if performed well and with material of the necessary quality, is beneficial in several aspects:

1. Chimney safety will be better
2. The smoke chamber area will experience improved integrity in structure
3. Parging usually ensures better operation and drafting of a fireplace/furnace itself, minimizing the possibility of creosote development inside the chimney
4. Parging makes the job of a chimney sweeper much easier

A Good Time to Parge the Smoke Chamber
Parging should be performed while the smoke chamber is designed, because this is simply the best and easiest time to do it. Of course, parging can also be performed afterwards, but it will be much more costly because it will take much more time and effort to do it.

Basically, it can be said that parging is connected to chimney maintenance and construction.

Construction-wise, one analyzes just how close burning wood will be to the smoke chamber. If burning wood isn't near the smoke chamber, then there is not much reason for concern, because there will be sufficient distance for the smoke to build up and slowly rise toward the upper parts of the chimney. On the other hand, if the chimney's smoke chamber is very near the burning wood, this could be a reason for concern and a possible fire hazard.

When it comes to chimney maintenance, if the smoke chamber isn't parged, there is much higher risk that creosote will build up-and also that it will be much more difficult to remove it, because a smoke chamber that hasn't been parged is much more irregularly designed.

Of course, even if your smoke chamber isn't parged, you can keep the chance of a fire hazard low if you perform regular chimney maintenance. Your chimney sweep can perform chimney maintenance and also parge chimney the smoke chamber (after the original installation of a chimney). The success of this later parging will be primarily affected by how the chimney is constructed. There are different procedures and methods in how to go about parging, from hand troweling, to the application of a spray under pressure. However, it is still possible that later parging will not be completely successful and that the smoke chamber will not be completely smooth.

Evidently, parging is recommended by the legislators, so it has to be beneficial for chimney performance and home safety. However, the smoke chambers in older homes have rarely been parged, so it remains at your discretion whether to do it or not-and just how successful parging will be in the end. We recommend that you consult a professional who will recommend the right choice after he examines the situation with your chimney and smoke chamber.
