Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to remove Bees from your Chimney
Bees are nature's pollinators and we humans enjoy the many fruits of their labor but sometimes they encroach into our space and removing them is a must; especially when they decide to set up their headquarters in or around your chimney. A bee hive in your chimney can be really dangerous for not only people who happen to be allergic but; to the whole house itself. Luckily removing the bees isn't difficult to do at all. First you have to confirm where the bees are entering from. Typically bees love to be near airflow so the updraft found in walls near your fireplace it a prime spot for them to nest.

The Chimney is made up of an inner flue and an outer wall so that crevasse between the two is usually where the bees set up their headquarters. Closely examine bricks of the outer chimney called weep holes. Weep holes let out the moisture built up in the cavity of the chimney often this is where the main entrance is for the feral bee colony. Be sure to watch the opening at the top of the chimney to see if there are bees coming and going. Sometimes there is a "chimney pot" a mechanism that constricts the chimney exit, bees will usually build a nest across the inside of the main flue or 2-3 feet further down. In order to remove the bees you will need professional help. Extracting old combs in the main flue won't solve your bee problem.

The safest most efficient way to remove the bees is to consult someone with a pesticide license to dust the flue down and the cavity with permethrin powder. If you have to go down the flue permethrin powder doesn't need to be applied with pressure. Simply sprinkling a cup of the powder down the flue will do the trick. If the bees are entering through the weep holes on the side, then that very same powder has to be blasted through the cavity. For the permethrin powder to take effect, takes about four or five minutes, there will be a few hanging around for at least a couple hours. It is imperative you avoid the urge to light a fire during this process or even shortly thereafter. If your chimney houses a metal flue a from a combustion stove don't light a fire in the heater. Wax running down the chimney will catch fire potentially burning your house to the ground. Once the bees are totally gone you will most like have to remove the inner flue and clean it completely. To keep the bees from repopulating in the same spot; increase the air flow through the area where the bees populated previously. They will not return to nest however; this method won't prevent scavenging by other colonies. Do not attempt to seal off further entry because bees always find a way in and become frantic when trapped Allow natural scavenging to continue, it aides in getting rid of any residual honey. Once the honey is gone the wax will dry up. Lastly remove the dry wax with a hook with a towel attached at the end. This will ensure all hive remnants have been completely removed.
