Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Eliminating Chimney Fires
Chimney fires can be scary, devastating, and most of all disastrous. No one wants to be a victim of a chimney fire. All your cherished belongings being engulfed by fire and having to rebuild from that, couple that with the trauma that comes out of having to go through something so horrific is upsetting and unsettling. The one main way to eliminate a chimney fire is to never have one occur in the first place. Prevention is the catch phrase of the day. If you can prevent it from happening at all you are batting a thousand. Once a chimney fire starts it's not easy to stop and it increases your chances of it happening again. There is no single standard rule of the frequencies required for cleaning the Chimney, but consistent cleaning is recommended every year. Creosote is formed when wood isn't burned completely. A fire without the proper amount of oxygen gives off an unburned vapor that condenses within the flue and attaching itself to it; this can cause fire outbreaks.

You can keep creosote from building up in your fireside by making sure sufficient burning air is flowing. A clean burning fire is what you want to happen every time you light a fire in your fireplace. Looking out for signs of Creosote is easy, first you need to inspect possible downdraft emanating from the chimney. If airflow is blocked within the chimney, you can detect this through the use of some tapes on the opening of the fireplace and watch for likely movements of such tapes. Alternatively, you can wear some goggles and mask tape and use a flashlight to scrape the back surface over the damper and if you scratch off some creosote, you will definitely need to clean the chimney.

While checking for creosote shine your flashlight near the top of the firebox in the smoke filled chamber, and around the damper, also check the flue as well especially on exterior chimneys because of the lower temperatures outside. The easiest creosote to remove is the light dull gray, brown or black soot. The black granular accumulation is removed easily with a chimney brush. The most difficult type to remove is a tar like coating and is much harder to get off even with a stiff chimney brush, scrapers, or rotary whips. The final and most deadly is a shiny glazed coating on the flue that is basically impossible to remove. You could remove the creosote yourself but for an excellent and thorough cleaning you should call someone who is certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. Be careful with who you hire and be certain they are doing more than merely pushing a brush. A good chimney sweeper is knowledgeable about building codes, trained to recognized certain problems and potential problems. It is recommended your Chimney be inspected once a year. One hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars is a small price to pay to preserve your house and most of all you and your family's lives.
