Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Are you noticing leaks near your chimney? Or, did you notice some water stains near your chimney? This may be because it is time the flashing on the chimney is replaced. It is best you reinstall the flashing on your chimney before any other damage is noticeable. All the things needed for fixing the chimney flashing are available at your nearby hardware or home improvement store. At a metal sheet store you can have a re-shape and pre-cut of your chimney flashing properly made and that will make it fit perfectly. Obviously the first thing you have to do is remove the damaged portion. With the aid of a hammer and chisel, simply scrape the damaged flashing off.

Next, you want to cut the bottom of the old flashing. You can use thin snips to perform this cutting especially at the bent area of the flashing. Make sure you cut the flashing to make it perfectly fit your chimney. Secure the base, while fitting the new flashing on the front area of the chimney. Make sure that new flashing overlaps the shingles of the roof and the bent area of the flashing must perfectly fit at the corner of the chimney. With the aid of the tin snips, the flashing must be clipped perfectly where the flashing and the chimney touch each other.

Be careful during this process and follow your measurements to the tee. The clipped new flashing must be bent properly around the chimney and gently hammer four galvanized nails through the flashing lying flat on the roof. Make certain all nails are evenly spread, and get the corner attached and step up the flashing by fitting an eight-inch piece of the flashing right over the corner of the chimney. Get the flashing set aside and simply put some caulking at the meeting point between the chimney and roof. With the aid of a hammer, drive two roofing nails through the flashing. Make sure the shingle is secured at the corner of the flashing and then lay the second flashing flat against the chimney.

Let the flashing overlap on the shingle partially, and place a shingle over the flashing piece with the nails. Make sure you repeat this step until you cover every side of the chimney. Gently secure the saddle of the chimney around the chimney's back area. Hammer roofing nails to get the saddle attached to the roof. Drive in the roofing in the roof every six inches. And get the shingles placed over saddles flat part. The shingles must be nailed and saddled perfectly through the roof.

The final step is installing the flashing. You will need a circular saw to make the grooves through the mortar. Make sure the grooves go an inch deep. Make sure you use the saw to create enough height for the flashing cap on the side of the chimney. Insert the flange of the flashings through the mortar and drill holes on the sides of the front of the chimney. Hammer all plastic anchors in the holes. Repeat this process completely around the chimney. Each flashing cap should overlap one another. Place caulk through the mortar joints in order to seal off the flashing and you are done. Be proud of yourself; you have officially significantly reduced the chance of having water damage or a chimney fire!
