Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Replace Firebox Refractories (or Panels)

A firebox is always considered as the most important part of an indoor fireplace. If you have installed an indoor fireplace, then you must know the fact that the firebox is the place that uses to receive huge amount of heat once the fireplace starts working. When you burn the woods, actually you burn it in the firebox. And this is where the heat remains quite high than any other portion of the fireplace. So, sometime a replacement is needed for the firebox refractories or known as the firebox panels. Due to excessive heat, such panels can start to deteriorate with time. So, replacing them with the new ones seems to be the best choice when you want your fireplace and chimney work in a perfect harmony. In order to do this work perfectly a professional hand is often required. Once a professional chimney sweep comes into replace the panels, he will have a keen look at the old panels. Right kind of tools is used to remove the old panels and then the new ones are installed.

In order to do this job, you may need to do some calculations related to the size of the firebox. While installing these new panels, the work is done in a step by step process. That means a chimney sweep will add the panel for the back wall first and then he will move for the other side and installs the panel for it. For this work special equipments are needed. A professional chimney sweep is equipped with the required tools to complete this task perfectly. Suppose your fireplace lining has got cracks of around 1/4" and more, you must replace panels for the safety reason. The replacement fireplace panels are been engineered for the extreme heat, and have best thermal properties, and used in the prefabricated or zero clearance gas and wood burning fireplaces. The panels are 1 inch thick, and fiber reinforced and is cut to fit the sizing requirements. They are used as the left, right and bottom panel, and tapered on an edge for the finished look while used as left and right panel. Suppose one panel doesn't cover an area you have, then you must order the multiple panels and cut to fit.

Nature of the Cracks

With cooling and heating of refractory on factory made fireplaces and masonry, you may expect minor cracks to happen....it is just nature of things. The small hairline cracks at refractory can be present after the repeated firings. When the fine cracks happen, you may rest assured that homeowner will enjoy fireplace with no danger! Actually, there's metal behind refractory on the factory made fireplace; thus, even though cracks get larger, fireplace still will operate very safely.

Replace the Refractory

One must consider replacing refractory when the large cracks happen. Suppose crack is bigger than 1/16" (thickness of nickel) refractory must get changed. Also, suppose refractory begins to crumble & fall apart in the chunks, then you must replace this. The refractory replacement on the factory made fireplace is relatively simple task that is executed by unscrewing the bracket, removing original refractory as well as installing new panel.
