Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

The reasons why an oil-fired appliance chimney has to be cleaned regularly
Chimneys that have been neglected for a long period, they are the reasons behind many injuries, deaths or expensive repairs each year. When there is a professional and proper maintenance, such injuries and death can be reduced a great deal. However, some home owners do not care about their chimney and they put the maintenance for other times and they end up not doing anything at all about their chimneys.

The right time that you can clean the oil chimney is during the spring time when the heating season has ended. In the winter, oil furnace has to burn for a long period and this may produce the oil soot that adheres to the chimney's side. The accumulation of such soot will lead to the deposits which fall at the base of the masonry chimney and on the top of the oil furnace which is found at the top of the furnace. This will restrict the flue gases flow such as water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Many people may fail to work on their chimney because they think that when a technician for an oil burning company comes to the home for the maintenance, they also clean the chimney. However, this may not be the case always. When the oil burning company staff comes to the home, he can do only some light maintenance on the chimney and some brushing on the connector pipes or light brushing. However, the chimney may not get attention when he is around. A chimney inspection needs the person to go up to the roof, to check the components of the chimney to ensure the safety, functionality and cleanliness.

The oil fire appliance may run for a long period especially during winter period and this can lead to a large amount of the soot to build up in the chimney. The soot may deteriorate with the clay titles in the chimney and it may lead to problems of drafting which will allow many and dangerous byproducts that are caused by the combustion such as carbon monoxide. In order to make sure that your family is protected against carbon monoxide, the maintenance of your chimney has to be the priority.

When you do not maintain the clay tile liner or the metal liner for the oil fired appliance, this can lead to safety risks and degradation. When there is even a small crack in the liner, it may lead to some drafting problem which will lead to dangerous byproducts and heat. A stainless steel liner may be subjected on the corrosion if it is exposed to the acidic and sulfuric proprieties caused by the oil soot.

It is good to ask for an annual inspection in order to be given the guidance on what you should do. If the sweeper comes into your home, he has to inspect and to remove all the chimney connectors. The inside of the chimney has to be inspected for the soundness and deterioration. When the chimney is cleaned well, the connectors' pipes have to be re-installed, the furnace will be restarted and also checked to ensure that the draft works properly.
