Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Some of the reasons why your fireplace may not work properly
There are many reasons why the fireplace may not work in the proper way. The fireplaces have always been used from the time that the cavemen found out that the fire can be used as a source of the heat and light. Even if the fireplaces have evolved from simple fireplace such as campfire from the modern factory made fireplaces, they all use the same principle and this is based on how the hot air rises. The fireplaces in the home also use the same principle. When the fireplace is lit, the air in the chimney will get warmer and the cool air found in the home flows in the firebox and it makes the fire to continue to burn and this is done in a cycle. Anything that can stop this principle can lead to malfunctions of the fireplace. Anything that affects the pressure differentials, air flow patterns or the actual construction of the fire place technique can prevent the fireplace to function well.

The common reason why the fireplace may stop to work may be the over accumulation of the creosote and this is serious problem that affect how the chimney is performing. As the creosote in the flue thickens, it restricts the flue and the area does not get enough air. This can be prevented by professional cleaning before the winter and after the season in order to ensure proper ventilation and to prevent the buildup.

When the chimney is short, the fireplace will smoke up. For the chimney to function well, it has to be at least 10 to 12 feet. When the chimney is taller, its draft will be stronger. When the chimney is short, the draft is not stronger enough and this problem can be solved by adding some feet over the existing chimney.

The fireplaces may also smoke if the homeowner had forgotten to close the fireplace damper. The damper has to be opened before the fire has started and this will prevent the heat loss when the fireplace is used. When the homeowners also forget to close the damper when the fire has gone out, the heated air will escape since the damper will act as an open window. In case you want to open the damper when the door is half closed, this will increase the smoke in the room but not the heat. In order to reduce the smoke in the room, open the damper and remember to close it when the fire has gone out.

You should also check if the flue is large to let enough air in the fireplace. If the fireplace has a small flue, it will not vent the fireplace properly and the smoke will enter back in the room. If you want to inspect your chimney to know why it not working well, you should do it on the day which have less wind. The wind may cause the downdraft where the dangerous gasses, creosote and soot are swept into the house. Opening the windows can help in counteracting the downdraft.
