Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Minimum Height and Width Dimensions of a Safe and Properly Working Chimney

If you have assigned an indoor fireplace for your home and now you are planning to assign a chimney for it so that you can find a safe and long use of the fireplace, then you should take a few things into consideration. It's the minimum height and width for the chimney that needs to be decided perfectly when you aim to get a safe and properly working chimney. A chimney that is installed properly while maintaining the right height and width can offer a hassle free use of the fireplace. It's the chimney height that needs to be ten feet from the rooftop. And the top of the chimney should remain two feet higher from that point. The width of the chimney also depends greatly on the size of the fireplace that you have installed at home. If the fireplace is big, then the amount of smoke and gas will remain more. So, the width of the chimney needs to be calculated accordingly so that the smoke and gas can easily get out of your home through the chimney.

At the same time, roof clearance also needs to be maintained when you are installing a chimney. In this regard, a professional and qualified chimney sweep can come up with better ideas. The dimensions like height and width can also change as per the requirements and appliances for which it is assigned. If you are not good at such calculation, you should leave this work for a professional chimney sweep. Firebox design is very important. Rear wall of a firebox increases vertically from floor of a fireplace and starts to slant towards fireplace opening at a top of gas logs. Sidewalls of firebox are vertical and note that firebox isn't same width front and back. This gets narrower on rear of firebox! Firebox depth doesn't include thickness of a brick – and marble - that faces the fireplace. It is important! You may mix and match the flue sizes with the chimney heights. To rightly size the flue, you should use Nomograph. It's always good to use smaller flue size while you have 2 choices. Whenever using smaller flue size, first you will have to raise the height of the chimney. The taller chimneys draw much better than the short chimneys of same flue size.

Smoke chamber design and height is also very critical. Generally, you cannot see the space since it's hidden above the fireplace damper. Height of a damper is critical also. The bottom of the damper must be a minimum of 8 inches above the top of the fireplace opening. Suppose the damper isn't at least 8 inches above the spot, you may have problems! So, it is very important you read the instructions very carefully before you do anything with your chimney. You can look at the illustrations that can help you to see how it is done in a right way! Thus, it is very important you pay attention to these things.
