Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to Repoint a Chimney?

Repointing a chimney is always considered as a critical job. It's a kind of repair work but for most it appears to be a complex job. So, proper ideas, knowledge, tools and accessories are required when you are going to perform this type of work. You also need to know the materials that can come into the use while going for a chimney repointing. This sort of work is great in terms of adding a long life to the chimney that has acquired cracks with time. There are many reasons why the mortar and bricks used for the chimney can come across cracks. Improper maintenance and weather effects can create cracks in the mortar and bricks of the chimney. However, the bricks used for a chimney can last for a long time but the mortar is something that has a less lifetime. So, once that period is crossed, the mortar can start to deteriorate and in that case you will need to go for a chimney repointing.

As this is a complex task, you should pay attention towards doing it with the help of a professional chimney sweep. He is the person who knows what to do, how to do and what materials can be used to get the chimney back into the shape. During such work the mortar and brick joints are scrapped and the cement is used to fill the cracks and gaps. If necessary, then some bricks can be replaced with the new ones and then the sealant is applied. Mortar between bricks on the chimney will start to crack or crumble with time due to constant exposure to outside elements. The damaged mortar will open the areas between bricks as well as allow the moisture to invade chimney, and leading to possibility of the chimney collapse and expensive repairs. You may remove damaged, loose or old mortar from joints between bricks & replace this with the new mortar and masonry repair caulk at the procedure called as the re-pointing. You need to wear the safety goggles whenever re-pointing the chimney. Tools you can use cause old, damaged and loose mortar to fly out from joints between bricks and in eyes if it is left unprotected. You can use dust mask in order to avoid the breathing dust made when removing mortar.

Position sharp point of the brick joint raker all along with chimney mortar line and the tool has 2 wheels that will rest on brick surface. Roll this along joint to remove loose, damaged or old mortar. Place cold chisel against damaged, loose or old mortar that brick joint raker ever fails to remove. You can strike chisel with the hammer to remove mortar from joints. You can use carbide-tipped saw to scrape mortar from the narrow joints. Check depth of joints between bricks where you are making the repairs. Depth must be ¼" in depth, and not deeper than say 3/4-inch. So, continue to remove old, damaged or loose mortar from joints till you reach its optimal depth. Brush mortar joints between chimney bricks with narrow wire brush in order to clean joints.
