Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

A Safety Guide for Masonry and Prefabricated Chimneys
Masonry Chimneys are the oldest form of chimneys that are still being used and built till date. They have their own set of rules for their construction and maintenance. The codes to regulate height and build of a masonry chimney vary according to the area. However, there are baseline codes devised by the National Fire Protection Association or NFPA. The regulatory height of any masonry chimney should be more than 3 feet high where the chimney touches the roof line. It should be 2 feet higher than any adjoining structures within 10 feet of its radius. There should not be any changes in the dimensions of a masonry chimney within 6 inches where they either pass through the combustion chamber, roof or ceiling.

Masonry chimneys should be lined with appropriate lining materials to ensure a better safety against fire and smoke hazards. If a chimney is inbuilt within the structure then a minimum clearance of 2 inches is recommended. In case the chimney is located outside then the clearance recommendation is reduced to 1 inch. Flues are required to be constructed for discharging any by-products of the combustion. When multiple flues are made for a single combustion chamber then the primary discharge flue should be able to release all the flue gases and by products of all the smaller flues combined together. Another important consideration should be that the flues must not be inclined more than 30 degrees vertically. It should be kept in mind that a round shaped flue is 100% effective than the square or rectangular ones.

With the recent advent of readymade things in our day to day lives chimneys also come in ready to use prefabricated types. They are becoming popular nowadays because of their cheap price ranges and less time consuming installations. These chimneys are usually made up of metals and come in a complete set of firebox, chimney systems and miscellaneous parts.

But it must be understood very clearly that these structures also require the same amount of care and maintenance as their masonry counterparts. 1/8 inch of clearance should be kept at the bottom of such chimneys for perfect insulation. Almost all the manufacturers recommend a clearance space of 2 inches between the chimney components and the wooden frame. The surrounding wooden frame often undergoes a decay called pyrolisis that causes them to catch a fire in a temperature as low as 200 degrees F. Therefore the wood framing should be regularly changed.

Special care should be taken while using a prefabricated chimney as to not burn any foreign material other than dried wood or clear away congested flue so as to avoid any serious hazards. The prefabricated chimneys should be used with only compatible pieces. The fireplace has to be kept squeaky clean when using a prefabricated chimney. All these considerations are to be done so that any potential risk in safety against fire and smoke can be avoided. Whether it is a traditional or a modern suave one, chimney safety practically remains the same and depends on the users.
