Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Deciding on Chimney Rebuild vs. a Tuckpointing vs. Repoint
Chimney performs a very important task of releasing the smoke in the atmosphere thus preventing accumulation of smoke in the house. Because of the chimney being exposed to different climates and also lot of heat, chances of damage in the various parts of chimney is common. Hence, it is wise to carry out inspection at regular intervals so as to identify any damage which is still in the initial stage and can be repaired incurring less cost.

Various situations which calls for chimney rebuilding, tuckpointing or repointing of chimney:

Damage in the chimney can call for tuckpointing, repointing or even chimney rebuilding. If the mortar present in the chimney has got damaged, it can lead to exposing the masonry material to lot of moisture. It is very important that the mortar is replaced in such case. In tuckpointing, deteriorating and ineffective material is scraped out and is replaced with fresh mortar. When the whole process is done, the mortar and the brick come back to original shape again. The work which is extremely critical, once done can prevent water to enter in between the bricks which is the main reason for cracks. Tuckpointing becomes a necessity when the chimney is not in a position to stop rain and water from getting into the brick chimney wall.

Through the process of repointing the old, damaged and loose mortar is removed from the brick joints and then it is replaced with new mortar. This ensures long life of the chimney. The mortar which is the main element that is used to hold the bricks together and thereby ensure proper functioning of the chimney can be damaged because of various reasons such as frost, wind, sun and the likes. Over a period of time the mortar will begin to crumble and crack. This will affect the functioning of chimney to a large extent. Damaged mortar can cause the moisture to enter the chimney resulting in chimney collapse and high cost repairs.

While tuckpointing and repointing are process that are used to repair the chimney when the damage is still at its initial stage, in case the deterioration is too much and the chimney is beyond any repairing or it can result in costly repairs then the process of rebuilding is done. Rebuilding process arises when the home owners do not do regular inspection of the chimney and thereby do not notice the damage at an early stage. Also, when in case of any calamity the chimney gets affected then rebuilding of chimney is done.

The main reasons for such rebuilds are infiltration by water, mortar crumbling, and exposure to various elements, time, frequent use, inadequate preventive measures and much more. The occurrence of any one of the above makes the chimney vulnerable and calls for some major repairs or rebuilds. Usually rebuilds are categorized into three types, those are, partial chimney rebuilds, roofline up chimney rebuilds and total chimney rebuilds. The one that will be chosen will depend upon the chimney condition.

The decision as to whether to go for tuckpointing, repointing or rebuild of chimney should be done only after getting the chimney inspected by a professional chimney sweep. He is the person who would be in a position to highlight the condition and provide you with the necessary suggestions to keep the chimney in good condition.
