Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Regular Inspections by Professionals is the Key to Long Life of the Chimney
Inspection of chimney is to be done at regular intervals to prevent any danger and also to repair a damage which is at its initial stage. There are various levels of inspections which have been fixed by the National Fire Protection Association. What are the areas that the professional chimney sweep will examine depends upon the level chosen by the customer.

Levels of inspection as fixed by National Fire Protection Association:

Level 1 inspection is called for when the venting system or the appliance has not changed much and you plan to continue using the system as you have been doing previously. Here the chimney is operated under similar conditions and also the appliance used continues to be the same. When the inspection is on, the inspector should examine the areas which can be easily accessible. The interior, exterior and other accessible portions of the chimney connection and the appliance as a whole is checked in detail. Lastly the chimney is checked for any combustible deposits or any obstruction that might be present and hampering the working of the chimney which has to be removed when repairing is done.

Level 2 inspections are sought when any kind of changes is required to be made in the chimney. Changes can be in the form of addition or replacement of any appliance, changes in the shape of flue or changes in the material of flue and many more. Also this type of inspection is required in case of transfer or sale of property and also when any external event such as fires, whether events or seismic events might have resulted in the chimney getting damaged. In this level a more detailed approach is used to check each and every part that is accessible. Scanning is done on the parts which are inside the chimney with the help of a small camera to look for any possible damage. However, no destruction or removal is done with respect to the portions that are attached permanently to the building structure or the chimney.

The last level of inspection is level 3 inspections. Here not only the areas covered under level 1 and level 2 are looked into but also include removal of different components of the chimney or the building when necessary. Interior chimney wall, chimney cap or crown and the likes can be removed at certain point of time to get access to the different areas where inspection is required to be done. In case of serious damage or incase any serious hazard is predicted then a level 3 inspection is done to find out the actual condition of the whole chimney. Unlike in level 2 here destruction or removal as required of portion which is permanently attached to building and chimney is done for completion of the total inspection and also as a part of the repair process.

The inspection should always be done by a professional so that he knows which are the areas that need to be checked for any potential danger and which level of inspection is necessary. After the inspection is done and faults are found then the repairs should be left in the hands of your professional chimney sweep.
