Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Professional Inspection Checklist for Chimneys
Chimney form a very important structure that is build to release smoke, hot gas and other such substances into the atmosphere. It prevents the accumulation of smoke that is caused due to burning of fuels inside the house. Due to it being subjected to constant heat, many parts of chimney may require repairing. Inspections of chimneys at regular intervals can help you to understand the present condition of the chimney.

There are various levels of inspection that can be carried out as per requirement. Usually there are 3 levels of inspection. In order for the inspection to carry out properly and the fact that the inspector does not miss anything while doing his operation, help of a professional checklist is sought. This checklist ensures that all the areas which need inspection have been covered by the professional chimney sweep. As soon as particular area has been inspected thoroughly, the inspector puts a tick beside the area covered in the checklist and his observation on the area checked. He may even provide his suggestion based upon his knowledge and expertise.

Areas covered under checklist:
  • 1. Checking overall chimney condition: The condition of the chimney as a whole should be checked both from outside as well as inside. The common questions which are asked at such stage are about the condition of the chimney, weather the bricks are in proper place? is the chimney badly in need of repair and the likes.
  • 2. Chimney Components: All the components that comprise a chimney should be checked in detail to find out if any of it is missing or not. In case of missing or damaged or rusted the components should be replaced immediately to avoid any further damage.
  • 3. Chimney Cap: Proper functioning of the chimney cap is essential for overall functioning of the chimney. When inspecting, it should be verified to see if the cap is functioning well. When there is any sign of it being damaged then repairing or replacement should be considered.
  • 4. Chimney Flues: It is to be inspected if the chimney flues are in functional and safe condition. In case of damaged or blocked flues, it can cause leaking of gas in the apartment and there are chances of fire. Hence any crack or movement in the chimney should be looked in detail. Also, the condition of metal flues should be checked at regular intervals as rusted metal flues are not safe to use.
  • 5. Chimney Flashing: The shingles are checked to see if they are in proper place. If there is any gap between roof and the chimneys professional help might be required to repair the gap. Water penetration or any sign of leaks should be reported and provision for repairing it should be done at the earliest.
The checklist comprising the above areas would ensure that the inspection covers almost all the areas related to the chimney. Some of the professionals involved in inspection can also follow the list of inspecting the cap, crown, lining in the chimney, bricks, flashing, draft, smoke pipe, damper, back wall, top plate, mortar joints and collar. The observation and comments are presented before the customer to give them a brief idea about the current condition of the chimney and which portions require repairing.
