Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Fireplace and Chimney Inspection Reports
Fireplaces are a necessity to each and every household in most cold climates. They are also an important part in family gatherings and likewise events. One should remember that the place which imparts warmth literally can also pose a serious threat against fire hazards if not maintained properly. The first step towards a proper maintenance of fireplaces and chimneys is regular inspection by certified professional chimney sweeps. It is recommended that any operating chimney and fireplace should be checked annually to avoid any malfunctioning and hazard.

As per the NFPA 211 rules there are three levels of chimney inspection which are as follows:

Level 1: The basic inspection requirements constitute the parameters of a Level 1 check. They are meant for continuously used chimneys and fireplaces. The technician is expected to check if the chimney and flue structure is basically sound enough against any potential hazard along with the installations and connections in case of a prefabricated chimney. In addition to the above they also evaluate if there are any blockages or combustible deposits inside the chimney.

Level 2: When any changes are made to the existing fireplace/ chimney construction or design, sale or transfer of property post any event reported to have caused damaged or a malfunctioning chimney, a level 2 inspection is recommended. These changes can include fuel type, shape of the flute, materials used for lining, along with addition or alteration of any related appliance. It is a more in-depth inspection as compared to that of a level 1 check. This type of inspection includes the accessible portions of a chimney with the help of tools to examine both their interior and exterior along with basement, crawl spaces and attics. It also addresses the decent clearance of combustibles from the chimney or fireplace accessible spaces. Often a video scanning of the totally inaccessible portions is done to report any major flaws or leaks.

Level 3: When a chimney or fireplace poses serious life threatening risk a Level 3 examination is immediately recommended. It is required to address the inspection of the concealed parts of a chimney and flue. If required there would be removal and de-construction of permanent portions of the chimney or building like the adjacent dry wall to complete a Level 3check.

Post an inspection a written report should be provided to the consumer for their record. Usually a level 1 report would include if the fireplace/ chimney meets the basic installation codes of compliance, types of appliance, along with certification markings and clearances. For a level 2 report one should expect a detailed written analysis of the whereabouts of the fireplace and chimney examinations. A typical level 3 report consists of deterioration of the combustion chambers and hearth extensions, damaged dampers operation, absence of smoke or carbon mono oxide detectors, about cleanouts not constructed with non-combustible materials. One should always remember to check the certified identity card of the chimney sweeps that arrive for inspection.
