Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Chimney Installation Code and Safety Guidelines

In the installation of masonry chimneys, the guidelines and codes for it should be followed to avoid any fire disasters and for us to be safe especially during the heating season. All the rules discussed in the NFPA 211 code should be followed during a chimney installation. According the standard code and guidelines, the chimney footing should have a minimum of 12 inches thick and extends a minimum of 6 inches beyond the sides of the chimney. The cleanout door should be tight-fitting while the chimney wall should be 4 inches solid masonry units, 6 inches actual hollow masonry units, and 12 inches rubble stone. There should be a thimble and a flue liner present instead of an unlined flue.

The upper part of the chimney should include a chimney crown which should be sloping downwards to the edge, it should have a flexible fill and sealing material and should be notched for drip edge. There should be insulation and the air space clearance should be 2 inches inside the chimney and 1 inch outside the chimney. If you can't understand all these technical aspects, leave the work to your professional chimney sweep installer and let them do what is best for you and your home.

It is ideal that the chimney should be installed in the interior of the house rather than outside the house because the air temperature is warmer. If it is installed outside the house, the air will be cooler and will just increase the chance of creosote building up inside the flue, which will cause chimney fire or house fire. It is better to get an expert that is certified by CSIA or Chimney Safety Institute of America and a member of organizations like NFPA or National Fire Protection Association to help you in installing your chimney at home. It is important that all the right kinds of precautions are taken and once that is done, then everyone is safe.

If you are planning to install a chimney, indoor fireplace, or new kitchen stove, then the first thing that you need to do is to have a good look at the chimney installation codes and safety guidelines. There are several safety guidelines you need to follow while installing these heating units. If you are not certified in the codes yourself, then you should hire a qualified chimney sweep. They are equipped with the codes and safety guidelines that are needed during the chimney installation process. Hiring one of them can really help you to find problems you're your current heating system or install a well-functioning new one. You would rather use the chimney safely for a long time rather than suffer an issue due to not knowing your chimney had a problem.
