Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Unsafe levels of Chimney Creosote Explained

Chimney creosote has three levels of buildup. A professional chimney sweep can identify them by taking a peek inside the flue or the chimney lining. The higher the level of creosote that is deposited in your chimney, the more dangerous it would be for you and the persons living inside the house. Let me explain the levels of chimney creosote that can be found in fireplace, chimney, or wood burning stove.

The first degree creosote is a high concentration of soot that looks flaky and is stuck in the chimney and can be easily removed by a chimney brush; this is just the normal creosote that you can get if you are using or burning a fire with dried wood. Second degree creosote is a hardened tar that is shiny and black. This degree of creosote cannot be brushed away but you can use a rotary loop to remove it, this type cannot be removed without extreme measures. The highest level is the third degree creosote which is very difficult to remove. It has a high concentration of fuel and it looks like a gooey, sticky tar that is drooping inside the flue.

The third degree creosote is the most dangerous among the creosote levels because this type is extremely combustible. A rotary loop can be used to clean and remove it but it will not be guaranteed that there will be no remnants. Third degree creosote is sponge-like and if it catches on fire, it spreads quickly and can easily catch on a roof. It will not take long to cause a house fire, and we do not want that to happen. If you have level three creosote, you may want to consider replacing the lining just to be sure all creosote is removed.

If you have a chimney for the kitchen stove or indoor fireplace, then you should pay attention to the level of creosote that can develop over the time. Sometimes, homeowners ignore or forget that they need to maintain their chimney by having it cleaned and inspected once a year. This is not the right approach and can lead to a dangerous situation.
