Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Waterproofing your chimney

Water damage is very common in chimneys and nearly every chimney we look at has some level of water damage to it. This is because the chimney is on the roof and exposed to the rain and snow so it is difficult to keep water away. However, it is very important that water does not seep into your chimney because if it does happen, the firebricks and mortar will be damaged and deteriorated. Water causes erosion and can lead to cracks. A waterproof chimney would be beneficial because it will help you to avoid the cost for repairs or replacement parts from damages.

The first thing that you need to consider when making your chimney waterproof is the surface area of the chimney so you know how much material will be needed. Measure the sides of the chimney and add up the four sides to get the total area of the chimney surface. Make sure that the chimney is clean first, by sweeping the interior with a brush. You can also clean by using chimney cleaners like ChimneyRx Safer Brick and Masonry Cleaner which can be purchased either online or any Home Depot or Lowes stores in and near your area. These over the counter products for cleaning should only be used after a good scrubbing to remove any creosote buildup. Cleaning a chimney and then waterproofing it is honestly a difficult job and would be best performed by a professional chimney sweep.

When starting the waterproofing process, protect non-target areas by using a canvas drop cloth or a material that quickly absorbs around the base of the chimney or even in any windows or sidings that are within the range of the overspray because it can cause discoloration. After cleaning, if you notice any cracks or deterioration in the liner, you need to do some minor chimney repairs like applying a sealant before choosing a water repellent.

Apply the first coating of water repellent using a pump garden sprayer with a fan type nozzle starting from the base of the chimney and moving from side to side, slowly towards the top of the chimney. Repeat the process within 3 to 5 minutes for the second coating. The water repellent will dry after 2 to 6 hours but make sure that there's at least a 6 hour gap of dry weather before waterproofing the chimney so you have ample time for it to dry. Avoid over applying the water repellent because it will result in a slight darkening of the surface.

You may have a chimney installed at your home for an indoor fireplace or for the kitchen stove but either way, making it waterproof is important when you are looking forward to using it for a long time. Waterproofing also helps to get a safe user experience, as your chimney will remain protected from any water that can come into it from the top. Another way to avoid water damage is to make sure you have a chimney cap installed on the roof. In order to make the chimney a waterproof one, you should consult with a chimney sweep. A chimney sweep can complete the job after cleaning and inspecting the chimney. Once the chimney is waterproofed, you can easily expect to use it for a long time at its peak performance without worrying about rust or cracks.
