Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Chimney pointing and firebox pointing

The term pointing, re-pointing, and tuck pointing are used interchangeably if you are referring to making some changes like restoring or repairing the chimney. Deteriorated and damaged chimneys and fireboxes are really not safe to use but if a chimney sweep can complete a chimney pointing and a firebox pointing, the chimney's life will be extended and will be safe to use. Water that seeped through the chimney damages the firebricks and mortar over time and it usually happens if your chimney doesn't have a cap. It would be more expensive if you replaced the entire chimney instead of restoring the portion that has damage. A good professional will give you very good pointing results, in quick time. Once you get right help things will be much easier.

For chimney and firebox pointing, the first thing that needs to be done is use a cutter blade on the cracked mortar or you have the option to drill it out then mix up cement. In mixing up the cement, instead of using just plain water, you can mix it with a latex additive but make sure that the ratio of the water and additive is 1:1 and apply it to the damaged chimney or firebox using a flat tuck pointer. Before applying the cement, you need to clean the area where you will apply it so there is no dirt or dust because the mortar will not adhere if there is dust on it. To ensure that there will be no dust, you can spray water on the area where you need to do the pointing.

Once you fill in the gaps with cement, you need to press down the mortar and smooth it out with a jointer. Since the shapes of the gaps between the bricks are almost concave, you need to use a convex jointer. Make sure that you are not going to wait too long because the cement might become hard and if it's too early, the cement might be too smudgy. After smoothing, let it cure afterwards.

These are the basic steps that you need to follow in order to complete chimney pointing or firebox pointing. When selecting the cement and bricks you should be very careful. You cannot just use any cement or brick. There are bricks and cements which are designed to be used for the chimneys only. Whether you are going for a refurbishment or you are looking forward to building a new chimney, the selection of mortar and cement plays a very important role.

These two items are literally the building blocks for a chimney. So, having high quality cement and bricks for your chimney will always help it last a longer time. It's all about safety and you can easily get this while using the cement and bricks designed for this purpose only. So, choose these items wisely and follow the right process to complete the tuck pointing/repointing task.
