Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Can I Use my Fireplace and Chimney After an Earthquake?

An earthquake is an unpredictable event; it is a calamity that cannot be avoided. After a seismic event or an earthquake, do not use your fireplace and chimney yet. Earthquakes can crack structures even if they are made of stones, or cements, or bricks. No matter how strong or sturdy you think your fireplace and chimney is, refrain from using it yet because you need an inspection first.

The first thing that you can do is to check for any damage or cracks in the structure of the fireplace and chimney by conducting an ocular inspection of your own. If you think that there's no damage or cracks, do not use it yet. Set up an appointment for a level two inspection with your chimney service technician and wait for their evaluation. They will let you know if you can start using it or you need to do some damage repairing first. If the inspector gave you a go signal, then that is the only time that you can start using your fireplace and chimney.

After an earthquake, there will be a lot of home owners who will call the chimney service technicians and ask for an appointment for a level two inspection so make sure that you call immediately after the seismic event so you will be the first name on the list. Even if you do not use your chimney, structural shifting can put you and anything below the chimney at risk as bricks can easily topple over in an aftershock. If you're not going to set up an appointment immediately, you will have to wait your turn for the inspection. While you are waiting for the inspection, do not use the fireplace and the chimney even if you are going to build just a small fire in it. You will never know what is going to happen if you do not have the patience to wait; it might cause a chimney fire.

Well, the above mentioned elements are really important for those who want to use their chimneys even after an earthquake. Your chimney may have suffered from damages that are not visible to you such as shifting of flue tiles or cracks in the brick and mortar. Some internal fractures may have come up the walls and floors and they are not really visible to you. If you have a prefabricated fireplace or wood burning stove, you could get cracking in these units as well.

A chimney inspection is what you need to opt for first before you start using the chimney after a natural disaster. Or else it can come up with serious situations that you may not handle quickly. Even when an earthquake occurs at a good distance from your place and you feel it, it's always suggested to get a chimney inspection before you start using it again.
