Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

What is fire clay and how does it work?

A fire clay is any type of clay that can endure an extremely high temperature. This material is used for creating a fire brick which in turn is used for the structures of chimneys or furnaces. It has a very high content of silica and alumina and has a very low content of materials that cause melting like magnesium, lime, and iron. It is also the type of clay which is used in making pots and sometimes, weapons. This is also an ingredient in making a mortar which is heat resistant and also ceramic tiles or blankets used for space shuttles.

Fire clay was said to be discovered when it fell into a fire and became as hard as glass in the year of 1400 to 1200 BC. It came from the ground where streams and rivers once flowed so it means that it came from the ground of a dried river. It can bear or withstand a temperature of 1,600 degrees Celsius up to 1,775 degrees Celsius. If you are going to look at a raw fire clay, it looks like any ordinary mud but if you are going to buy it, you can get it in powdered form which is dry. It is heavier than ordinary soil, sand, or even cement.

We are very lucky to have discovered the fire clay because without fire clay, there would be no fire bricks that we can use to build our chimneys, which in turn provides the heat that we need during cold weathers. Without fire clay, there would be no mortar that we can use to bond our fire bricks which makes up the structure of our chimneys and other parts of the house. We would not have discovered furnaces and ovens as well without fire clay.

The importance of fire clay in building chimneys is just unmatchable. There is hardly any other element that can withstand such high temperatures and changes that occur when a chimney is working. If you are planning to build a chimney at your home then you should take proper advice from the professional chimney sweep located close to you. There are many professionals in this business who can guide you to choose the right kind of chimney tiles.

Having the proper knowledge about your chimney can really help you to make the best use of it. As fire bricks are important for the making any chimney, you should have proper information about them. Fire clay is used to make these special bricks that can withstand against high temperatures used to construct chimneys. Always take good care of your chimney and it will not give you too many problems.
