Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Stop smoke from entering your home through your chimney
One of the most common issues that we see when we use a chimney is one of smoke. This article explains in simple terms how this problem can be resolved. You will learn how to stop smoke from coming into your house. You don't want your house to become a firebox. Before learning how to DIY, you will need to know about the physics behind the workings of a chimney. I hope you will enjoy reading about it.

Chimney physics
How is a fire generated? In order to get something ignited, there are three things that are required. These are oxygen, an oxidizing agent/fuel, and heat. Only when all these three things are present in sufficient quantity will combustion be complete. This is referred to as the fire triangle. In a closed room, there is always a deficiency of oxygen. Hence, a pathway for oxygen should be made so that it can come inside the chimney. Draft is used to bring oxygen into your room. Draft refers to the difference in pressure between the gas inside and outside the chimney. This difference in pressure is generally strong. Thus, it can take in oxygen and remove the smoke and exhaust gas. If your chimney has proper darft, then there is no issue of smoke.

Finding the real culprit:
Usually, the issue of smoke is due to inadequate draft. In ideal conditions, the draft should be greater than 20 Pascals. It is a challenge to reason why there is improper draft. Thus, a trial-and-error method is used. You should not hesitate to try different techniques to find out the reason for inadequate draft. You should ensure that the cross-sectional area of your chimney flue is 1/10th the cross-sectional space of the firebox. The easiest way to correct the issue of smoke is to expand the lining of the chimney flue by some meters. If that doesn't work, you can increase the amount of combustible material present. This will increase the amount of heat generated and thus, raise the pressure of the gas inside. This will also raise the draft. Hybrid dry wood with less moisture is known to generate less smoke, so it is advisable to use it.

Check every material in your chimney
Precious heat is lost if there are any voids, cracks, or crumbling material. So, all parts of the chimney should be free of damage or flaws. If any defects are observed, the concerned part should be either repaired or replaced, depending on the extent of the damage. If you use dirty materials, you will not get a good draft. Thus, you should have cleaning done for all parts twice a year.

Keep an eye on your surroundings
If you find that all the chimney parts are working perfectly and have no defects, yet your smoke problem is far from resolved, you need to turn your attention to the chimney. A chimney works best in cold and non-windy weather. If there are strong winds, your chimney cap is likely to get damaged. Thus, you need to insulate your chimney if you live in a windy place. In hot places, the chimney cap needs thermal insulation. Do not allow the surroundings of the chimney to interfere with the inner gas movement.
