Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

History of chimney sweeps
Chimneys have existed for many centuries. In the 17th century (long before the days of the internet) small boys would climb and clean the chimneys under the supervision of the master sweep who would then pay them later on. During this time, primitive materials such as the metal scrapers were used to get rid of the hard deposits of tar. The sweeps in this case were orphans or simply the slave children. The issue of using small boys to clean the chimney was not successful at some point in many parts of London since some would choke to death. Without the right protective clothing, soot would accumulate allover and this would give rise to new infections, in simple terms this had to be reviewed in the House of Lords since it was regarded as a violation to human dignity.

In Europe the earliest way of cleaning the chimney flues was by the use of a ball brush and rope. This is the most widely used procedure in Scotland to this day. With the increase of industrial revolution, there has been need for coal and this is what led to the multiplication of chimney sweeps. The switch to gas as a way of domestic heating in the early 1970s made everything much simpler. In fact, more people have become aware of this kind of heating and there was need to emphasize on the safety measures in order to reduce the occurrence of carbon monoxide which is fatal.

During the early period young boys and girls who were sold as slaves served the role of chimney sweeps. It was never easy since the chimney flues were narrow and this could be worsened by thick soot. These children worked under their master in order to get food and shelter in exchange. Since they were scared to get onto the narrow chimneys their masters would light some fire beneath to motivate them, this was undesirable. There were many cases of fatal falls especially if the chimney has rotten. In the 18th century, Joseph Glass later invented a special kind of equipment for cleaning the chimney and it had canes and brushes. The equipment was effective to clean the entire part of the chimney from top to bottom though this has been modified today.

Nowadays the professional sweeps are normally trained and have the expertise to inspect and detect any kind of damage on the chimney. They also have well protected clothing to keep them off from any dangers, this old job has changed for the better, and nowadays children can no longer work as chimney sweeps since they are protected by the law. Today the chimney sweep does much more than just cleaning, they also have to inspect, repair and make replacements if possible. This has become a respected profession that safeguards the health of the homeowner and also generates enough income for the sweep. Chimney sweeps have also been trained and approved to provide ethical and cost efficient service.
