Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

If your fireplace is a costly unit, you should not try to put back the fire box on your own. Only a professional mason should attempt to substitute the fire box with a new one. However, if you have a smaller fireplace, replacing the fire box is very easy because the unit is simple.

When attempting to replace the firebox, either on your own or with the help of a professional, you must firstly observe the construction of the firebox. If it is a manufactured firebox, you must stick to the manufacturer's previously designated panels to replace it. Check the measurements of the fire box before getting on with the job.

Fireboxes should not be substituted without first checking whether a replacement is required. Given below are certain signals that one should check to see if the firebox is still working properly:

• See if there are any cracks on the firebox. Cracks mean that you should definitely replace the firebox.

• With a trowel, rub various sections of the mortar in the firebox and see if it is crumbling. It you observe any crumbling, then the firebox needs a replacement.

The following steps should be taken to substitute an old firebox with a fresh one:

1) Cement preparation for masonry: The instructions provided on the cement bag should be followed. The correct mix of cement, sand, and other ingredients should be done.

2) Clearing old materials: Get rid of the old mortar in the fire box with a hand rake. Use a crowbar to loosen mortar that is adhering to the bricks and release it with a trowel.

After the removal of the mortar, all the bricks should not be removed at once. The bricks should be taken out section by section. Thus, slowly, all the old bricks will be replaced by new bricks and joined with fresh mortar.

3) Combustible clearance: You can enquire of professional masons whether a clearance of 0.5 inches is needed for your firebox.

4) Manufacturer's specifications: Check the bottom panel of your firebox for specifications given by the manufacturer. Remove these specifications from the panel and store it for future reference.

5) Choose a new model: On the basis of the specifications of the previous model, choose a new model.

6) Put back panels: Replace the old panels with new ones, if you find that it is pre-fabricated.

7) Draw patterns on bricks: The appropriate patterns can be drawn on the bricks with the help of a trowel. Refractories are used to put cement on the panels, which gives it proper outlines.
