Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

When looking over the general characteristics of a chimney, the first thing that one should check is whether it meets the clearance standards set for its width, height, and other measurements. Several problems of fireplaces and chimneys occur because of inappropriate dimensions. These issues range from inadequate draft in the chimney to fireplace smoking. Local codes are available for the fabrication of a chimney in various places in different types of terrain. However, a consolidated code is available that includes all the different groups of the local codes. This makes up the National Fire Protection Body of a country. For instance, the NFPA in the United States has a common group of rules and regulations that are applicable throughout the country.

If you were an engineer tasked with designing a safe chimney, you may ask the following questions about its design to check whether it can be directly operated.

1) How tall should the chimney be?

First, one must look at the height of the chimney. As per the NFPA, a chimney must be at least 10 feet high in order to work properly. To prevent smoke from one's surroundings getting into one's chimney, one must ensure that the chimney on top of one's house must be at least 3 feet and also at least 2 feet higher than neighboring buildings that are within a distance of 10 feet.

2) How thick should the wall of the chimney be?

Most often, chimneys are constructed of brick or masonry that have walls at least 4 inches wide, as per the standards set by the NFPA.

3) What should the width of the chimney flue be?

The width of the chimney flue should be such that its venting purpose is accomplished and so is its corresponding measure, as given in the standards. Building codes differ based on the appliance that is being vented by the flue.

While deciding the width of the chimney flue, a ratio of 9:1 should be ensured between the area of the fireplace and the cross-sectional area of the flue. This ratio ensures that the draft through the flue is proper and prevents the mixing of smoke and freshly-introduced air. However, occasionally, the 10:1 rule is also used.

4) Are all the internal clearances of the chimney satisfactory?

The measurements of the chimney should be made in such a manner that it provides enough clearance from all the parts inside the fireplace because they are combustible.

The most important factor is that the space between the wall and the material that covers is should be at least 1 inch.

Since the stove is situated very close to the wall, it should be coated with a layer of incombustible material. As per safety standards, the clearance that should be ensured is as much as 36 inches for radiant stoves. For other types of stoves, the clearance can be less.

Also, there should be a minimum of 18 inches of space between the wall and other inflammable surfaces.
