Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

You may have everything you need to clean your smoke shelf, but all your efforts at shopping for the right stuff go to waste if you do not remove the damper plate. This is a small metallic plate which is fixed in the fireplace that helps keep the chimney in a closed position. The chimney is kept closed so as to capture the internal heat as conditioned air as well as prevent cold air from entering your home.

This damper plate should be removed at regular intervals for the purpose of its cleaning or for the cleaning of the smoke shelf. You may find yourself in a situation wherein you are unable to figure out how to remove the damper plate when you first look at it. Some damper plates are not designed to be separated from the smoke shelf. Hence, the first step is to check whether the damper plate can be removed from the smoke shelf.

In most cases, you will find that the four corners of the damper plate are fixed on tight with the help of four bolts. You will need to remove the bolts with the use of a wrench or a ratchet. This can be done by moving them in an anti-clockwise direction. The next step is to separate the damper plate from the rod that keeps it rigidly in position. With gradual movements, remove the rod by turning the damper plate in a sideways manner.

Instead of bolts, you may discover cotter pins. These will be welded into the damper plate. Such plates cannot be removed from the smoke shelf. So, trying to reach the smoke shelf or the fireplace from the bottom is a waste of time and energy. This situation requires a top-down approach. Here, you must enter the fireplace from the top. The existence of a non-removable damper means that the fireplace has to be cleaned with the help of special brushes. These brushes are commercially available. Following is a description of the different types of brushes found:

1) Round wire brushes accompanied by extensions: These brushes are made in different sizes such as 6-inches, 8-inches, and so on. To know which size is suitable for you, you will need the measurements of your fireplace.

2) Stiff polymer brushes: These small brushes are used to reach the fireplace from the bottom, even in cases where the damper plate is not removable. This is done by thrusting the brush into the gaps in the plate gently. A professional is needed to perform this type of cleaning because it needs a skilled hand.

3) Pull-cord chimney brush: This brush is so named because a cord is fixed to both ends of the brush. The brush is meant to be dropped into the fireplace from the top. It is used to clean the fireplace by pulling it along the sides of the fireplace, using the cords at both sides.

4) Rope brush: This brush can be lifted or dropped to various heights in the fireplace using a rope-pulley system.
