Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Chimney Inspection Explained
Most houses have chimneys that are mostly used during the cold weather as outlets for exhaust from fireplaces. For safety purpose, chimneys need to be regularly inspected to ensure they are in good working conditions and to avert any hazards they may expose people to. Chimney inspections are classified into three different levels with each following different criteria and having a different extent of work.

Level one inspection is carried out when the chimney system can be easily accessed. It is the most performed inspection in most homes. Here the system is checked to ensure the structure is sound. At this level all deposits are cleared to remove any obstructions within the chimney.

Level two inspections may be carried out when you add another appliance to your chimney system. It is also carried out when you intend to transfer or sale your property. If you undergo a malfunction that you suspect may have caused damage to the system then a level two inspection is recommended. In this inspection level pressure and smoke tests may be conducted.

If results from level one and two inspections suggest any hidden hazard then level three inspections will have to be carried out. It is majorly conducted in concealed areas to ensure they are in good condition or when a hazard is suspected.

Inspections are recommended to reduce incidences of carbon monoxide poisoning or fire occurrence. Inspections are classified as Level one, Level one or Level one. Every level of the inspection will cover some specific items that depends on individual appliance or venting system. Here is the explanation of 3 levels of the inspections or what services chimney service technician must give for every level.

First Level Inspections

Suppose your appliance and venting system hasn't changed and you are planning to use the system as you've in past, then Level one inspection is the minimum requirement. The first Level inspection is suggested for the chimney under the continued service, under same conditions, or with continued use of same appliance. In first Level inspection, chimney technician must examine readily available parts of chimney interior, exterior as well as accessible parts of appliance and chimney connection.

Second Level Inspections

The Level two inspection is needed when any kind of changes are actually made to system. The changes will include change in fuel type, shape, and material in, flue (relining), or replacement and addition of appliance of dissimilar type, efficiency and input rating. Additionally, 2 Level inspection is needed on sale and transfer of property or after operation malfunction and external event, which have caused any damage to chimney. Chimney fires, building fires, weather events and seismic events are indicators that the level of inspection will be warranted.

Third Level Inspections

The Level three inspection includes all areas & items checked in Level 1 & 2 inspection, and removal of some components of building and chimney where essential. When any kind of serious hazards are been suspected, the Level 3 inspection might be needed to determine condition of your chimney system.
